“Be sure to get the key for stunning views!”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

We have been visiting Scotland now twice annually almost every year since 2005. Our first visit to the Borders we were intrigued by this tall tower, and vowed to explore it on our next visit.

This we did, and enjoyed a picnic with stunning views from a bench in the field just below the Monument.

The following year, an offchance conversation with the potter at Smailholm Pottery, we learned that, Lothian Estates, in BonJedward, will hire the key for a nominal fee, and subject to signing a disclaimer.

So, the following year, we arranged to pick up the key, and I must say, are we glad we did! 236 steps later and you find yourself in a viewing platform atop the monument with the most stunning views! We took a picnic with us, and had a quite magical time.

I highly recommend you get the key, then park at the Harestaines Visitor Centre for about an hours pleasant walk up Penniel Heugh to the Waterloo Monument.

“nice walk with great views”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

Starting from the nearby Haretanes Visitor Centre, there is a nice walk through woodland and alongside fields up to the top of Peniel Heugh. Once at the top the views on a clear day are stunning and there is also the fabulous Waterloo Monument itself. It is said the woods around the hill were planted in the formation of the armies at the battle of Waterloo.
Well worth the walk.
