Jedburgh Castle & Jail Museum

Jedburgh is a lovely place and the Castle stands in splendour at the top of the town. It is very interesting and visitors are well informed throughout. The jail is excellent, with dummy prisoners in some of the cells and information boards about crimes, punishments etc. The effect is accentuated with the location of the Castle - at the top of a long hill banked by terraced housing. Quite a walk but so worth the effort - go and visit this atmospheric place! Oh, admission if free!

Like all the best castles, this is built in solid stone at the top of the town, ready to repel the rievers and others who stormed around the Borders in our past. Breaking into it, or out of it would be a challenge to a Colditz veteran. In our free tour we learned that it was so well appointed as a prison that vagrants would beg to be admitted in cold winters. The prison was designed by Howard of the Howard League of Penal Reform to be civilised, secure and warm. It is a fascinating place, full of interest, well served by the electronic guide we hired for 50 pence. This was the only outlay, and we spent over two hours looking around, delving into its history, and sometimes passing the time of day with a happy coach-load of kids who seemed as interested as we were.

Free entry, fascinating story, very attractive building (ironically, as it's a prison). A thoroughly enjoyable tour.

A good attraction to visit for free, some of the old cells are quite dimly lit so it feels quite spooky and the models can be a shock if you are not expecting them. The castle gives a good feel for how conditions used to be for those being held there, worth a visit
