“A Beautiful Retreat”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

In some ways this is quite an old fashioned place, with its decor and atmosphere comfortably of the past. In this lies its delight, along with its old fashioned levels of commitment to making sure
residents feel at home.

Our room was a little cluttered for our taste, but the bed warm and comfortable. In our (far end) of the house, the shower room was fascinating, appearing, is it may have been in the past, to be on the way upstairs.

Sheila is a worker and a good host who, if necessary, would put herself out on your behalf. Her breakfast is excellent, and her local knowledge useful.

She and her husband discovered this delightful house and garden as they made regular business trips to Edinburgh from the south. They stayed. So should you, for longer than you might be planning, to discover and savour the south of Scotland.

We stayed at Hundalee House for one night on our way upto the Highlands. The house is in a beautiful, peaceful spot along a country lane, a 5 minute drive into the centre of Jedburgh. The rooms are big with every facility. Mrs. Whittaker is extremely friendly and nothing is too much trouble. One down side is the breakfast; it just wasn't hot enough, only just warm really. Having said that, I'm sure that if I'd asked, they'd have done something about it. However, for me the breakfast is a deal breaker and for that reason I would only rate Hundalee as average.

Pros:
Beautiful host Sheila, who will look after you during your stay
Lovely country house, decked out fully with vintage decor (four posted beds, peacock, flint lock rifles on the wall, vintage dining room, nice carpet and wall paper etc)
Clean
Nice full British breakfast (included)
Excellent value (60 odd pounds for two people)
Again, they have a peacock

Cons:
none

Stayed one night, wished we could have stayed longer but did not have the time. Sheila and Peter were the perfect hosts, my husband spent all his time talking about sheep with Peter, while I spent my time looking around the house, the drawing room especially is great, the gardens are to die for, wished mine looked as good as theirs, breakfast was served round a large table, or there is another table if you do not want to mix with the other guests, it was great meeting people from all over the world, it was a full house for Sheila I do not know how she manages e dry thing as all was perfect, breakfast was wonderful we went away stuffed, the room we stayed in the four-poster in the main house house had a great bed it was the best nights sleep of the whole holiday and the shower was really powerful, we will be back

Room Tip: Talking to other guests all rooms seem great especially the four-posters

At the end of a narrow road/long driveway, this is a lovely stone detached house with antlers and stuffed fox heads on the walls. Very atmospheric.I stayed in the ground floor double room (4) - a very good night's sleep, although chilly the bed was snuggly and warm. Telly is small. Room was fairly small with not much room to move around the bed, but this was reflected in the fair price of £58 incl breakfast, cooked to order. You can choose from a wide selection of breakfast bits, including haggis which was lovely. Bacon is cooked earlier and probably kept warm in the oven which makes it hard - kids struggled to cut it up. The bathroom is very nice, with robes and toiletries.Lovely garden and grounds with space to sit outside. Jedburgh is about a mile away. You can walk, or take the car, and that's what you have to do if you are hungry in the evening, unless you've packed nibbles. Dogs cannot be left alone in the rooms, so you have to put them in the car while you eat breakfast.
There is a good selection of places to eat in Jedburgh.
Well worth a visit and getting a traditional Scottish feel of Jedburgh.

Room Tip: Ground floor good for dogs as near the exit door

We only stayed here 1 night with 2 kids (aged 8 and 9). The setting is idyllic; peaceful and tranquil. We received a very warm welcome, firstly from the dogs and then Sheila. The room was fine and absolutely right for the age of the house. My only drawback is that, although it was perfectly fine for a 1 night stay, I think we would have felt cramped for any more than that. Breakfast was one of the best I've had for a long time, with homemade jams, honey etc and delicious haggis available on the cooked breakfast. It would have been an added bonus to be able to buy a sandwich on our fairly late arrival but I'm just being greedy!
