“The ideal getaway - food out of this world!”
Reviewed May 12, 2009

I am a well seasoned traveller, and visit hotels the length and breadth of Ireland, and due to the strength of the Euro, me and the wife decided to give one of County Downs hostelries a visit this year. We were very happy with our decision. Not only is the Portaferry Hotel a "wee gem" on the shores of Strangford Lough, with stunning views over to Strangford, but the welcome one receives on arrival is first class. A small seemingly family run hotel, it has that feel to it, we were checked in by a very pleasant woman who got us a table in the restaurant that evening. The room was well appointed and the bathrooms looked brand new, or at the best very well cleaned! Dinner was spent looking over the views of the lough, and the food was simply fantastic. A nice walk afterward helped digest the lovely dinner.
We will be back!!

I could not agree more with the Taxman.....
The same thing happened to me when we went to this establishment .
I had booked a table for lunch and when we arrived no table was available. All had been taken. The bar was busy and the women we spoke to (two off) could not find the booking and were really not interested whether we stayed or not. They had as much charm as Mr Hyde
Not a place to go to at all.

I have been to this hotel/restaurant many times and under previous management, such as the Hurlihy's,it was a fine establishment. I regret to have to say that it has gone completely down the pan. We had booked a table for lunch. On arrival it was clear that the place was busy and no table was available at the time we had booked despite this being nowhere late enough for us to have been given a second sitting. We asked why no table had been reserved and it was clear from the outset that the staff couldn't care less. When we eventually got to speak to a woman who said she was the manager, she denied we had a booking by producing a scrap piece of paper which she claimed was the bookings list. I queried whether this really was the bookings list for a hotel/restauarnt and was then accused of lying about my booking. If this is the standard of customer service now, then I for one will not be back. I invite the owner to publicly respond

Fantastic evening meal. Interesting and varied menu. Excellent value for money. Approx £65 for 2 three course meals, 2 soft drinks, 1 glass of house wine and 2 coffees. Service polite, efficient but friendly and unrushed. The best meal I've had in a long time. Lovely restaurant with beautiful white tablecloths. Had our pre-meal drinks sitting outside at a table looking over Strangford Lough. The waiter took us and our drinks through to the restaurant when our starters were ready. Didn't stay in the hotel but if the restaurant and bar is anything to go by I should think that it's of a good standard.

Nice hotel and excellent views over Strangford Loch.
The room was nice but some attention to detail in the cleaning was needed, our bath plughole was full of hair!
The check in was good and we had a lovely evening meal.
The food was to a good stabndard and comes highly recomended.
On deciding to turn in early I had to contact reception as
piped music could be heard quite annoyingly in our room no.4.
They did apologise and turned it off straight away.
The next morning at breakfast there was a long wait for the full Irish Breakfast which did not materialise as we were told mid breakfast the gas cooker developed a fault and no hot food could be served.
They did apologise and offered more toast and tea etc and refunded the breakfast price from the cost of the stay but it was a bit dissapointing to say the least.
On check out the new printer was not working so we have to ask for breakdown of the bill as we were at first just given a price.
The staff we very nice it has to be said and were very apologetic folr the breakfast debacle.
All in all a nice hotel that is nearly a great hotel but they need to brush up on a few things.

We just love this hotel.
We try to go at least twice a year.
We love the food above all else.....truely the best service we have had experienced in recent years.
We now have a 3 year old child and the hotel couldn't be more tolerant and advise us not to order a separate meal for him as there is ample with our own.
Love the rooms and the ambience.
TIP: Always ask for a room with a view.

Going next weekend with 13 of our friends for my husbands 40th birthday and cannot wait.

Hope we won't be disappointed.

This is a charming hotel. The rooms are small (as expected) but quaint and lovely. Ours had antique furniture, twin beds (comfortable enough), a decent shower, and a fabulous view overlooking the lough and ferry dock. Many thanks especially to Claire and Marcos, who both offered great help from the front desk regarding our many inquiries. It is a bit confusing to check out early (before 9 a.m.), as a previous reviewer said. I suppose if we had known that, we could have worked out our departure more efficiently the night before. But no matter, the housekeeper was quite pleasant about us being up before anyone else and made us a wonderful breakfast. I'm sure she could have directed us to a cafe elsewhere, it was much appreciated that she took it on herself! The restaurant food is good, although the menu seems a bit short after 6 p.m., and the bar area (where one orders dinner and waits for a table) is cozy. We were there on Mother's Day weekend, so it was quite busy but very efficiently run. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel. Also, if you're up for a pint of Guinness before bed, take a short walk up the hill to Fiddler's Green pub. The folks there are great, and their fireplace on a cold night is just the ticket! FYI, we did not visit the aquarium, but it's right next door to the hotel and looks interesting.

  • Liked — the rooms were clean, the staff was very friendly
  • Disliked — our stay was too short!
