The hotel grounds were gorgeous! Location was great! The breakfasts were good and plentiful and the Restaurant Manager - Darren was outstanding!! Having said that, our first dealings with the staff (Michelle) at the front desk was anything but pleasant. She bordered on being rude! Especially when I questioned why we were put on different floors when we had booked 2 rooms. I had read other reviews before we left telling you to make sure you asked for a refurbished room and when I asked her if our rooms were refurbished she said "Oh yes". My husband and I had a hard time finding our room until finally we walked down a hallway (like a service hallway) and through a door with a hand made sign saying "to Room 58". When we walked into Room 58 we were disgusted! It was a tiny, dark, unrefurbished room with a terrible bathroom where you had to step down to get in it and bend down as you went through the door because the door was only 5 feet tall! To top it all off, when we were checking out the same staff member tried charging us twice for the stay (we had prepaid several months earlier) and would only believe us when I showed her a copy of our paid receipt. Obviously we aren't the only unsatisfied customers as several current reviews state similar unsatisfactory experiences.

Dear Mrs S

Thank you for your review and you certainly have a point about room 58's bathroom if not slightly over egged as the room itself is neither tiny or dark and this is an unfair assessment but again you do have a point about the bathroom . The room is the least expensive in the hotel and is classed as a no view standard room however the bathroom is about to undergo a complete refurbishment. The room sign is made of polished brass and not home made.

To clarify the two room booking, you booked them separately under different names and never did you mention the rooms were related or together and you were the last two rooms to check in that particular day and as we were full we couldn't upgrade you.
You mention Michelle and are been very unfair, you wanted to know why the rooms were on different floors but as mentioned earlier they were booked separately under different names and we wouldn't automatically assume they were together(why would we if not told). You got upset because she couldn't upgrade you and you stormed off. We didn't charge you twice , it was a system error and was immediately rectified and the receptionist apologised.
It is a very busy time in the Lake-district as the season is in full swing but we do try so hard to keep everyone happy as the vast majority of reviews bare out.

May I wish you well in your future travels

Kind regards

G Wilson

Excellent break, staff very pleasant and welcoming. Grounds very nice being on the shore of Ullswater, and we had good weather, no daytime rain. The room was very comfortable and clean.

Enjoy your lovely Cumbrian breakfast, and try to ignore the breakfast waiter who dashes about like someone demented.

The food was very good to say we were on a package of DB&B.

One word of caution, we booked through Hotel Exclusives, but had we checked the hotels own website, we could have got the same break/package for £100 less, will be more diligent in future.

Room tip: Because we were on a package our room was at the back of the hotel overlooking the car park, but we could also see up the valley towards the Helvelyn area lovely view, if you wish to pay extra you can book rooms with lake views and lovely balconies.

Stunning views over Ullswater, excellent rooms and food but the outstanding thing about this hotel is the attitude of the staff. They seem very well trained and are very efficient. Unusual in the hotel industry in the UK.
Compared to many Lake District Hotels who only seem bothered about taking as much money off you as quickly as possible, the Inn On the Lake seem to have their priorities right and the customer comes first.
Great place.

If you only stay once in the Lake district make sure you stay on Ullswater, the most beautiful of all the lakes. Several of the finest hotels are situated on the shore and The Inn on The Lake probably has the best setting. Pay a little extra for a lake view and wake up to one of the worlds most stunning views.
We stayed while attending a wedding reception. The whole event was very well organised with excellent food and service. A good stock of beer and malt whiskies in the bar and a variety of comfortable rooms to relax in.
