“Very special hotel”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

This is a very special hotel, with service and staff to match. The grounds are worth a visit in themselves, and just to spend time here is calming and restorative. Take your camera!!

My stay was due to an office Christmas Party, and it will remain a party to remember - for all the right reasons! The hotel is both effortlessly elegant and reassuringly modern, and has a great public bar serving excellent food and beers.

Ok, it is not cheap, but would you really expect somewhere like this to be cheap? For somewhere as special as this, it is great value for money. Evening meal, breakfast, bedroom, reception areas, bars, grounds - all perfect.

I have looked again for further visits, and not found any Late Room style discount offers, but this will not put me off returning to this fine hotel experience.

Room Tip: Just go...!

This was our first trip to the Lake District and it sure won't be the last! We booked for a two nights Booster break stay at the Inn on the Lake during the Easter Good Friday and Saturday, we travelled from South East England and the traffic was bad, all in all it had taken us around 8 hours (normally it would take around 5 hours) so we did not arrive at the hotel until almost 9pm, our package included dinner on the first night, and we did not expect to get anything to eat since we arrived rather late, but the receptionist who greeted us was really lovely and asked whether we had eaten, to which we replied we hadn't but we did not expect anything since the restaurant stops serving food before 9pm. However the receptionist told us that the kitchen staff would be happy to prepare us some sandwiches once we have put our luggage into our room which we thought was a really nice gesture. After such a long journey we were delighted to enter our beautifully appointed Lake View Superior room, it was definitely worth the money! the furnishings really complemented the surroundings of the entire hotel, although the bathroom had not been refurbished, it was very clean. The complimentary water and biscuits was also a lovely touch. After about five minutes, we were surprised to receive a call from a member of the restaurant staff saying that if we would like to come down to the restaurant the chef is ready and waiting to prepare our meal for us! We felt very bad and did not want to cause inconvenience, but the head waiter who greeted us at the restaurant was extremely professional and courteous, informing us that it was no trouble at all, and that it was they were there for. He also recommended us of places to visit and was extremely friendly. The food was all presented very nicely and was delicious, the lamb shoulder was cooked to perfection, it was a shame that we did not have desert as it was getting late. The breakfast in the morning was also plentiful and the cooked to order breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs was divine. All of the staff were so polite and friendly, it certainly was English hospitality at it's best. The only downside was that there was a wedding reception going on during the second day of our stay, so we could not have lunch as the restaurant was closed to prepare for the wedding, and the night before that, at around midnight we could hear guests going in and out of the room next door to us, and they were talking and laughing very loudly in the corridors which disrupted our sleep, but I guess that cannot be helped, I think if we were ever to go back again we would make sure that we are not booked into a room that is next door to wedding guests. All in all though, it was a truly wonderful stay, and I would have to agree with the other reviewers that the breath taking views of the lake and mountains from Lake view room is something that would stay in your mind for ever, as we have arrived at 9pm on our first night, it was very dark and we could not see any of the magnificient views, and I couldn't wait to get up the next morning to see what all the fuss was about, but boy was it worth the wait, it is simply majestic, and out of this world! there were still some snow left which added to the bewitching beauty of the fells, it was so picturesque and just made you feel in awe of the magnificience of the Lake District. It really is one of the most beautiful part of the world. With such beautiful and scenic landscapes, who needs to venture abroad! The Inn on the Lake simply commands one of the most spectacular views in the Lake District and must be seen to be believed. Both myself and my husband have had a very traumatic few years and needed to get away from it all for a bit, we wanted somewhere very scenic, tranquil and peaceful, and needless to say we have truly enjoyed our stay here, and have now recommended it to friends, family and relatives. We are considering going back again one day...so if you are hesitating as to whether or not to book this hotel just do it, it will not fail to impress you, you will love it just like we did!

Room Tip: Just check that you are not next door to a wedding party

We have just returned from our 4th stay at the Inn on the Lake, and it never fails to impress. From the moment you arrive, you are in for a treat. The staff are without doubt the best that we have encountered at any hotel. The quality of the meals, and the quiet atmosphere of the lounge allow guests to experience fine dining in a relaxing environment. With the spectacular views from either the bedrooms or dining room, a stay at the Inn on the Lake is a must.
When the swimming pool and extra bedrooms are built, I hope it does not lose its soul, and tranquility, and become too large.

Check in was swift and the staff were very attentive. We were pleasantly surprised to be allocated a lake view four-poster room after booking a fell view superior room. The view from the seating area in our room was fantastic; not leaving the room and ordering room service for the whole stay did cross my mind for a short minute and if we had not been in such pleasant surroundings, we may well have done just that. We took a boat trip on the lake, visited the local shops and walked but did not do much else which was our intention............

The calming music at breakfast overlooking the lake was so restful; and we were extremely impressed by the standard of food at dinner. The bar and lounge area were extremely relaxing to soak up the atmosphere, play games and read the days papers or a magazine from the huge variety on offer.

Husband and I bought a picture many years ago of Ullswater - had not realised it was taken within the hotel grounds which was amusing as husband was hoping to find where it was set. All added to the specialness of the stay :-). We feel sure we will go back sometime soon - hopefully in the not too distant future. I think we will wait to return when the orangerie and swimming pool are complete............would highly recommend; just book it!

Room Tip: Any rooms at the back of the hotel - opt for a lake view if there is an intention to spend time in t...

There are sayings and there are sayings but 'Peace Perfect Peace' would suit the Inn on the Lake perfectly. So relaxing, such a classy feel all round. We stayed for 2 nights D,B&B on a Travelzoo deal just after Easter and couldn't have made a better choice. Setting, decor, service, bedroom, food, country house atmosphere, other guests - all wonderful. Even the work to upgrade aspects of the property was discrete and didn't disturb one bit. Came to leave and every aspect of the bill was spot on - not something you always find. Will definitely recommend and will definitely return. Thank you to all concerned.

We spent 3 nights at The Inn on the Lake at the end of March when snow covered the fells and the weather was dry but so cold ! We enjoyed every moment there and cannot fault this excellent hotel.
There was building work outside and decorating work inside taking place but it was not in the least disruptive and noise was kept to an absolute minimum.
Our room had a magnificent view of the lake and was so comfortable and cosy as we looked out onto the snowy mountains and heavy skies.
The food is truly wonderful and the evening menu is one to look forward to! The staff are excellent and are so polite and helpful and welcoming. Our family joined us for one of the days we were there and they were made equally welcome as soon as they arrived.
It is a very well run hotel and this was our second stay there. We hope to return again in the autumn as it is an ideal place to stay.

Room Tip: Just check that at the moment you are not looking out onto building work as it does distract from th...

just had a two night break, first time here but definately not the last. the ultimate room with a view, could sit there for hours, as mentioned by previous reviewers a refurb is ongoing but not at all obtrusive,.....then there are the staff, i cannot praise them enough, totally professional, courteous and efficient, whatever this company does to train/find staff, it should be written down and used as an industry standard, a lot of higher priced hotels i have stayed in have been let down by surly, unhelpfull staff but not this one. keep up the good work, thank you.

Room Tip: got to be lake view superior
