“Fine Hotel in Great Location”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

We stayed at the Inn on the Lake for 2 nights in August 2012. This is definitely one of the better hotels that we have stopped in the UK. Location is right on Lake Ullswater and the building in general is excellent. It has the added advantage of a pub attached to the building, very useful when it is raining (ie most of the time in the Lake District!). Room was very nice with a view of the lake, hotel lounge and bar were enormous. We spent more time at the hotel that we would normally do simply because it is so nice.

Room Tip: Pay a little more for a lake view - worth it

Will echo all that is said about this place. It simply is excellent in every way. The views are wonderful and the dinner and service in the restaurant cannot be faulted. I will however say that the reception staff could learn a thing of two from the staff at the restaurant. They could be warmer and we felt somewhat rushed. They did however answer all the questions and complied with all requests.

stayed at the inn on the lake for a short break when we arrived pleasantly surprised with the hotel, decor lovely, spotless clean. The views were stunning even though we did not have a room overlooking the lake. The staff were very warm and friendly nothing too much trouble for them, food was lovely very well presented and the breakfast lasted me all day verry filling and plenty of it. One thing i would comment on there is nothing going on in the hotel to entertain the guests i did suggest this to the manager who was verry willing to listen to suggestions well done inn on the lake will definitely visit again.

We have been to the lakes many times before but this was our best ever. The staff make this hotel they are so friendly and helpful.Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is beautifully maintained as are the extensive grounds which are a picture with the lake and the fells as a backdrop.I would certainly recommend a lake view room as it is brilliant to wake in the morning and admire the views. It was nice to see the hotel bar had two real ales on from a local brewery. The bar, lounge and restaurant all have views of the lake and fells. With regard to the restaurant I would have been happier with plainer food at dinner but that is a personal choice.Breakfast has an extensive menu to choose from.

Room Tip: Try to get a lake view room

My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights for our friends wedding and I must say we were extremely disappointed with certain aspects of our stay. The location of the hotel is superb as was the standard of room, although somewhat pricey, We looked forward to having our dinner there on the first night especially after a long car journey, Considering this is a 4 star hotel which boasts a rosetted restaurant the food was no better than food we have had in lesser starred establishments. Maybe the chef had taken the weekend off ? whatever the reason, we had a very lack lustre meal indeed. the food was bland and the presentation was lacking a little something. Nevertheless, the next morning we both looked forward to a traditional full breakfast. For a hotel of such high standards I found the breakfast no better than what I could get at a small bed and breakfast. The sausage was tasteless ! Surely the substantial amount of money each guest pays for a room iwould be expected to go towards good quality food ? It's all very well advertising yourself as a four star hotel but the food was obviously sub standard and ruined our whole experience.

I would like to say thank you for posting your review but unfortunatley I wont. Its not the fact that you posted a negative review. Rather its that having rated us so well on everything but the food and then put one point rating with such a bold harsh heading is quite clearly inconsistant and unfair. We had so many compliments about the food but if you weren't happy why didnt you speak to me or one of my managers and we would of gladly sorted something out for you.

All I will say is that the rest of the wedding party were delighted and left very positive comment cards and lots of thank yous on departure.

Again sorry we didnt meet your exacting standards but anyone reading this review please look at the oter 99% of wonderful reviews we have recieved.

Wishing you well in your future travels.

I have been visiting the beautiful lake district for over forty years and I have to say that this hotel is the best one that I have ever stayed in. My husband and I stayed here for three nights in a lake view superior room. The decor is beautiful and so are the views from the many, many windows in the various rooms. There is always somewhere to sit and read, relax or enjoy coffee or a glass or two of wine and we felt "at home" here.

The staff are obviously very highly trained and are friendly, polite and cheery. What a difference this makes to the hotel guest especially if you have come away to unwind or get away from "problems" or "work". There is a lovely calmness about the place, almost magical at times.

The food is extremely delicious and the staff in the dining rooms are superb. My husband is a plain eater and some of the dishes were too fancy for him but the staff did all they could to accommodate him. Even though the hotel was very full when we were there it was still quiet and the guests seemed to mostly be over 50. There were a few dogs staying as well, great if you do not mind dogs sitting in the public lounge whilst you are enjoying coffee, but if you dont....go elsewhere!.

As the dress code is smart for the evening it was lovely to get dressed for dinner and most people were suitably attired, BUT there were those who thought that a fleece top and crumpled chinos was suitable for a place such as this which did " lower the tone" as they say!. There were around 27 weddings here in August this year so I would say that this hotel is extremely popular for all ages and gatherings.

We though that our room was a little bit small for a "superior" as we got a chance to see the top four poster room and it was three times the size....lovely! However the balcony and the lovely decor made up for that. What spectacular views, well kept grounds and a lift. Essential for transportation to your second floor room after a fabulous six course dinner. What a fantastic place, four star at least! We are looking forward to our next stay (in the four poster room of course) Not cheap to stay here but well worth it.

Breakfast is served in the dining room between 8am and 10am which is lovely if you like a lie in as most people do on holiday. Good choice of food including cumbrian breakfast, kippers, pancakes, porridge and continental breakfast. I have to say that the staff are really excellent and I would have no hesitation in recommending The Inn on the lake to anyone.

My only real gripe would be that the bathroom was too small and not enough storage space in our room but this did not affect our enjoyment in any way.

Room Tip: If you like space go for the four poster rooms views from the "lake" rooms are spectacula...

We got married at the Inn on the Lake and wow. Gary and his entire team ensured nothing was too much trouble from the time we arrived the day before. The room we had was beautiful.

The views are amazing and gave us some fantastic photos. The staff are second to none, the food, wine and service is excellent. I have stayed in 5* hotels that are nowhere near upto the standard of here.

The children in the wedding party were all catered for so well, the elderly family members also.

We just love going back up for a mini break and enjoying the hotel and surroundings. It has a truly magical feel everytime.
