“Your own bit of the Indian Ocean”

As a family, we have stayed in a number of 'luxury' villas, many of which gild the lily somewhat in terms of their descriptions and photographs. This cannot be said of Salt Beach House - the photographs on their website are exactly what the place looks like. A hop over the white picket fence (a gate is also available) sees you land on a beautiful, unspoiled SW-facing beach - if there are more than four other people on your beach, it feels intrusive. The sea is a bit too rough for swimming on SBH's part of the beach, moreso given the rocks, but a ten minute walk takes you to a small lagoon where for 1.5 hours either side of low tide, there is an idyllic ocean swimming-pool safe enough for even the smallest children.

The house itself is not overly fancy (it doesn't need to be), but is spacious, clean and more than adequate for four people. The deal is B&B, but the onsite 'host' Ranjan will cook you up any Sri Lankan dish you ask for if you want a change from cooking/eating out.

As other posters have mentioned, the house is on the very busy coastal road, 10-15 minutes from Galle Fort by tuk-tuk. The buses (some of which have pimped their rides with ship fog horns) take no prisoners as they hurtle along, but I guess that is arguably part of the charm. With the a/c and ceiling fan on, it didn't intrude that much and is very much part of the Sri Lankan experience.

The kids loved the swimming pool, which is set in a lovely small, shaded garden with two sun-loungers.

It's hard to fault the house - for those planning to extensively self-cater, the nearest supermarket is in Galle and a microwave would be a useful addition to the kitchen.

Highly recommended.

Came here as part of a two venue villa holiday for a week with our young daughters. The place is fantastic, rolling views of the ocean. The villa was stylish, had all we needed and the house staff were great, and Rajan looked after us very well . The best local restaurant by far was Talpe Beach Restaurant. Highly recommend it, the garden pool was amazing, the kids loved it.

“Perfect beach stay”
Reviewed March 3, 2015 for a stay in February 2015

This villa is really a gem. Located right on the beach with private pool, and everything you need inside the house - kitchen, lounge area, a big sofa with a sea view etc. We have stayed 3 nights with 2 small children and enjoyed every bit of it. You cannot live any closer to the sea without getting wet. The beach is good for swimming within 50 metres to the right of the villa. But the wave break maybe quite strong. Also if you are careful you can cross the break and go snorkel right outside the villa at depths of 2-6 metres it is very nice and a lot of colourful fish. Otherwise 200-300m to the left there is a very beautiful area closed by the reef - so no waves, clear water and some nice corals and fish. Extremely convenient when traveling with children.
The service by local gust manager Ranjan was spotless. He has made tea/coffee and breakfast whenever we asked. Also it is much better to ask him to make lunch than even go outside to nearby hotels/restaurants.
Everything inside is predominantly white colour - so it is very easy to spot dirt, which we did not manage to do. The place is kept 200% clean! Even bathrooms (half way open air in one of the bedrooms) were very tidy.
The only drawback is that the bathroom wall is right next to the main road, and therefore not much noise isolation between the road and bedroom. So you can hear the busses and lorries and bread tuk-tuk starting at 5:30 in the morning. But that is all part of Sri Lanka experience if you choose to stay at a villa on the coast.

“Beach house bliss”
Reviewed February 28, 2015 for a stay in February 2015

If you're looking for a relaxing stress-free place to stay - this is it!
The 4 of us stayed here for 4 nights (it was originally 3 nights, but we called two days beforehand to come a day earlier and Antoinette kindly accommodated), and it was the perfect end to our 2 week SL trip.

Whilst the property sits directly on the beach, you would have to walk 10 mins down towards Wijaya to be able to swim where the waves are calmer and where there are less rocks / coral. The property comes with a private pool and 2 sundeck chairs so there really isn't a need to leave the property if you wanted to enjoy a laze under the sun. Our only gripe was that the pool was only cleaned 3 days in to our 5 day stay (granted we came a day earlier but we still did not understand why it was only cleaned so much later after we checked in).

Ranjan cooks a simple Western eggs on toast breakfast every morning - this came with the stay. If you wanted to convert it to a Sri Lankan breakfast, this came with a fee. On two of the nights, we decided to stay in to cook and the kitchen was fabulously equipped (with the right pots / pans and even basic spices). If, however, you do forget buying an ingredient, Ranjan will pick it up for you (and outside of the cost price, you'll just need to top it up with 200 to 300 rupees for the tuk tuk ride) - fantastic!

Overall, a great relaxing place to stay for either friends or 2 couples. It is a 5 minute tuk tuk ride to Unwatuna beach, and a 12 minute tuk tuk ride to Galle Fort. Thanks again to Ranjan and Ram for taking care of the property and ensuring that we were all taken care of.

Management Response
Mar 1, 2015
Hi guys, we are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Salt Beach House! We just wanted to say we are disappointed that the pool was not clean enough in time for your stay. We had a problem with filter part which needed to be replaced which must have slowed the cleaning process down. In the future we will take extra care to make sure it is clean enough. Thanks for your wonderful feedback and thanks for staying with us! We are really glad you enjoyed your stay at Salt Beach!

Cheers

“Perfect villa perfect location”
Reviewed February 18, 2015 for a stay in February 2015

This house was THE perfect location for our first time in Sri Lanka. Situated directly on a beautiful beach that we classed as crowded if there was 6 people in around 600 metres of Coast! - so much better than a hotel. The house keeper Ranjan prepared beautiful breakfasts every morning and would also do the grocery shopping when required. However the highlight was his cooking ! He cooked for us 3 times, a great Sri lankan curry, a beach bbq with fresh fish, and then some perfectly cooked lobster! Who would want or need to go out? The house itself was well equipped with aircon And fans and big doors which open the whole house up to the ocean.- fabulous. I should also mention the house manager, Rasi, who is a lovely guy and can fix anything you need from transportation or whale watching to trips around the island. He also has a lovely boutique cafe which serves great food. All in all I would highly recommend salt beach house and I hope to return again soon

“modern, fresh and stylish beach rental”
Reviewed January 3, 2015 for a stay in December 2014

My husband and I stayed here with our 7 month old baby in December for two weeks. A new rental property, where we were really well looked after by Rangen who was fantastic with our little boy and discretely cleaned the house while we were out on the beach or out sightseeing. There is also a night watchman who patrols the property at night which gave us total peace of mind with our small baby.

The house is well layed out for a no fuss beach stay, simple and modern and very bright and fresh looking, with a lovely sea breeze coming into the house all day. Beds are very comfortable, ( they also had a travel cot for our baby with a mosquito net) great a/c and gorgeous indoor/outdoor bathroom off the main bedroom.
There is a good size pool as well as a beautiful quiet beach right outside and it is a few minutes walk down the beach to a restaurant called Wijaya which serves good variety of meals where we walked to to swim with the baby in the sea in the reef protected pool.

About 10 minutes drive into Galle town in a tuk tuk and to Unawatuna beach only 5 minutes so location wise it is ideal with small children as journeys sightseeing are short. Few small supermarkets along the main road near to Unawatuna and couple of larger ones in Galle town to stock up the fridge. We liked Keels (near to train station in Galle ) the best.

Excellent wifi facilities and superb view of thunderstorms from the enourmous sofa!

We loved staying here, a real treat to be beach front and this place would suit a whole family, young couples, friends...
