“Imagine if medieval castles had been this warm and luxirious!”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

We loved this romantic castle with its authentic furnishings. Even though the weather had been chilly and rainy, the castle and our rooms were warm (One thing I'm always wary of is old stone buildings in bad weather!). Among our conveniences were a heated towel warmer in the bathroom. !) . We particularly enjoyed a romantic dinner (see pix) but portions are large, and we could have been quite content with 2 appetizers and one entree between us! (An odd thing- virtually all the staff disappeared before the end of the meal - I wonder in retrospect if it was connected to a national strike the following day- though the front desk staff was available at checkout). The castle is also quite spread out, so be prepared to walk a little to your room. Also note: the castle was built (the legend goes) by peasants in exchange for a weekly ration of salt!)

Room Tip: Ours overlooked an interior courtyard. Many outside views overlook a (not particularly attractive...

I use a rolling walker and requested and received a disabled access room. It was lovely with views over the courtyard and beyond. The room was large and easy to maneuver but as in all paradors, throw rugs were placed on the floor by the bed and are an impediment to wheelchairs and rolling walkers. However, it is easy enough to move them over into a corner. The bathroom was large enough and offered a roll in wheelchair shower. I do not expect all areas of a property this old to be accessible. Staff placed a ramp at a side door for access to the dining room. The bar, terrace and cafeteria however were hopeless with no ramps and plenty of steps without even handrails. Again, staff was helpful, offering to deliver food to my room as an alternative. The paradors have excelled in presenting the history of the castle and I enjoyed the tour of the chapel. I think children old enough to be safe climbing the tower and exploring the ruins would really enjoy this parador.

The pleasure of staying in a castle so beautifully restored to provide every modern luxury but without spoiling the medieval experience is unsurpassed.
The views are magnificent, the rooms and facilities extremely comfortable and stylish (four poster beds are enormous!) and the feeling of being surrounded by history is fantastic!
We found the staff utterly delightful, the food delicious, and the surroundings stunning.
On arrival we were given a leaflet detailing a history-hunt which we followed around the castle learning about its history.
This castle is magical and romantic and such an easy drive from Barcelona, it perfectly complemented our city & beach break!
Couldn't recommend it more!

How often do you get to stay in a castle - a real castle mind you, one that's got a history of over a thousand years.

Utterly stunning views - especially from the roof terrace, and a hotel which manages to be modern and comfortable, but still feels absolutely true to its heritage. Friendly staff and a delicious restaurant - the foie and mushroom ravioli was divine, as was the duck confit with pears, and getting to sleep in a proper four poster bed just makes the whole experience perfect!

We stayed at this Castle in October and were upgraded to a superior room over looking the courtyard next to the chapel. Very large room with a king 4 post bed, sitting area and large bathroom. Every modern amenity was available without loosing the historical flavor that drips from this property. The castle is on a hill overlooking the town on one side and the salt mine on the other that put this town on the map. The hotel is easy to get to and you can drive almost to the front door at the top. I recommend parking at the upper ramparts and walking around to become familiar with the property. The roof top patio is the place to unwind and takin the sunset with your favorite beverage. Dinner was very good in an atmosphere of a king's court, minus the king. This is not a huge castle but it has the right amount of history to make you feel the king's daughter is still in the Tower. We will go back if we can.

The location is every bit as stunning as other reviews here have described it.
Wonderful work by whoever oversaw the integration of old (ancient) and new, and restoration vs. preservation works of the venue.
The amnesties are what you could expect from a regular 4 star hotel.
The staff (and by proxy, the management) however, is another story.

Here is what the hotel brochure says, I cite:
"it is our job to make sure your stay with us is a pleasant one. If you have any special needs ... please do not hesitate to tell us. We shall be delighted to attend to you personally."
What can I say? Words come easy...

During our short stay I met 4 different reception clercks. They were all downright unfriendly.
I was tempted to say that "they seem to pretty much like their job except for these damn tourists who are such a nuisance!..."
None of them speaks a word of English - which is not uncommon in this part of the country, although you might expect otherwise from a 4 star hotel who caters to international tourists - but, unlike other personel and people we encountered in Cardona - they also make no effort whatsoever to understand or to be understood.

I had a personal issue (a bone to pick) with the way I was treated.
Our party reserved 3 rooms. Having read other visitors' reviews on this site, I requested rooms which DO NOT overlook the salt mines. I did this by mail and phone on three different occasions.
I was assured my request will be taken into consideration but I was also told that guests are assigned to rooms in order of their arrival.
So, we changed our travel plans and arrived at the hotel a few hours earlier than we originally had intended.
At check in I enquired if the rooms we received comply with our request. The receptionist assured me they do, but what a disappointment it was when once settled in our rooms we opened the window shutters to see the industrial backyards of some factories and the gray salt mines, after all.
What were they thinking when they answered my explicit question at check in? That I will never look out of the window and never find out I've been duped?

The view alone is enough to warrant a stay at this hotel, apparently one of the top Parador locations, built at the ancient castle and religious site on the heights above Cardona. Fortunately the accommodation keeps up with the view, and we found the staff friendly and helpful, during our three day stay. The included buffet breakfast was quite wonderful and well anticipated each day. We had one evening meal there, but felt the quality was not quite up to the standard the Parador organization might wish. This was all good, however, as it caused us to explore town restaurants which were delightful. Arrival at this location pretty much requires a car, or a pair of climbing boots. It is fun to poke about the historical bits of the castle, or sip an aperitif on the patio in the shadow of the Maiden's Tower and look out over the still operational salt mine that dates back to the Romans. A quite memorable place!
