“Comfy & relaxing castle”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

Clearly the best location & a real landmark in Tortosa.
The caste stands on top of a hill, with wonderful view over the surroundings and easy walking access to historic city center (cathedral, etc.). Hotel room was perfect. There is a swimming pool with lot of sunchairs around.
Dinner is served in a large and splendid room - however food was rather average (let's say "average+", but we were used to higher standards in other Paradores in Spain).
Fantastic breakfast.
I do recommend this place for a one-night stay.

We stayed here in early October while traveling across Spain and France .Good location overlooking the town. The best I can say about the room is, while it was clean, it was basic and tired and the bed needed replacing. The evening meal and breakfast were good and the staff were helpful.

Somewhat difficult to find initially due to small signage. You need to be aware of the narrow and steep entrance into the hotel.

Well I felt like a Queen sleeping here! This was our first experience of a Parador and it was all that I had hoped for. What a privilege to be able to stay in such a place at an affordable price. There are some steps you need to haul luggage up but never more than 3 at a time. There is a lift to the upper floors. Our room on the 2nd floor had a balcony overlooking a valley and included a desk, bar fridge, 2 small armchairs and a coffee table. The décor looked fresh and had character. The twin beds were very comfortable. The huge ensuite had a shower over a full length bath and 2 basins. While my husband managed to cause a minor flood on the floor when taking a shower, I did not find it a problem thanks to a warning by a previous reviewer (it’s just a matter of positioning the swing screen appropriately). From the castle grounds there are lovely views of the river, surrounding hills and town of Tortosa below. At 122 Euros for a twin room with breakfast in late September, I thought this excellent value. My only negative comment concerns breakfast. The breakfast room is lovely with mountain views from some windows. The range of food in the buffet is extensive. The coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, fruit and large anchovies were all excellent but I found most of the remaining choices fairly bland/lacking in taste, especially the cheeses and cold meats. Given Paradors are known for their fine dining and they make a point of highlighting regional food, the breakfast was somewhat disappointing. Regardless, we would definitely recommend staying here.

This hotel is in the best tradition of Paradors, historic building in an intersting town, converted into a comfortable hotel. We've stayed in lots of Paradors and whilst this wasn't our favourite, it was just what we had expected. It's a short walk, downhill, into Tortose which is a very interesting town with some very good restaurants, wich is a good thing as the worst aspect of this Parador for us was the food. We had one dinner in the restaurant, which was very disappointing and even breakfast wasn't up to their usual standards.

Overlooking the city of Tortosa and the Ebro river, this Parador Castle is a comfortable and interesting retreat, offering character accommodation, and an overall good standard of hospitality and service. Breakfast choices are excellent and the inclusive Half Board "Parador menu" provides a range of delicious options incorporating regional dishes. The hotel pool is a welcome and refreshing facility after a day exploring the city and beyond. Tortosa itself is an interesting city to explore as is the nearby Ebro Delta area. Note: The Hotel must be very challenging for guests having disabilities. Although there is an elevator to the upper floors, it is first necessary to negotiate steps . Stairs provide access to the dining room and outside to the pool area.

Well where do I start ! after a very tiring weekend in Barcelona a very relaxing three days in Tossa de Mar. We headed off to the hills to Tortosa to stay in a Castle! So after a long drive from Tossa, James (our satnav) took us to the correct end of the town but told us we had find our own way from there because he was confused. The Castle is so prominent it wasn't hard to find but knowing which roads or archways to go up or through to get to the hotel was a little more difficult, we stopped and asked some locals if they knew the way (well we held a piece of paper out with the address on and our new found friends had a heated conversation with each other and the older of the two had a sudden inspiration so after a few hand and arm gesticulations some of which would be classed as an insult in Blighty we gathered we were going in the right direction, but at some point we would have to do a very sharp and steep left turn) we thanked our locals in our best Brummy Spanish and continued on our way. Having been a courier (white van man) in the past I had learnt to read hand gestures and it became quite clear that hand gestures are multilingual because within minutes we were in the hotel car park with no help from the hotel itself I really do think that they didn't want us there, no signs!,
The hotel is stunning both inside out and as others have mentioned some areas need a little attention, but overall an incredible place, we were greeted with a smiley faced receptionist who's eyes were firmly fixed to her computer screen and only broke contact when she took my passport and brought over the paperwork for me to sign, at no point did our eyes meet, we were given our key and directed to our room. (We were not asked if we needed assistance) we were booked in for two nights B&B and after a long drive and realising it was a steep walk down to the town we decided to eat at the hotel. I studied the menu a little expensive but hey we are staying in a castle lets push the boat out. Well that's when it all started to go wrong.
It seemed as though the staff didn't really want us there either, they seemed very hostile and had no intention of trying to communicate. Brummy spanish is a little strange, but at least we were trying. I would have thought working in a service industry that is one of the most important things Communication.
I told my wife my theory was that the castle was going to be a prison but then it was decided to change it to an hotel but that time they had trained the staff so they used the same ethos, its a job and we don't have to befriend the inmates!
The restaurant was ok, food ok, staff not so good.
The breakfast was good.
The room was good.
The views good.
Anyway the attitude of the staff spoiled it for us, so we cut our stay short and moved on to our next destination.
I cant use the rating section below its stuck on terrible so I have only been able to mark the first one "service" I think I will let that one ride.

We stayed for 2 nights in this Parador and the positive parts were that it was clean, tidy and on each night we slept very well in comfortable beds. Also, the Parador’s staff were very pleasant. That is where the positive ends.

We did not like:
1. I’m not sure when the buildings were converted into the Parador, but as sure as eggs are eggs, the whole place is in desperate need of a make-over and not just a lick and a promise of paint.
2. In our room, there was a gap between the shower screen and the edge of the bath, consequently when showering the water flooded on to the bathroom floor, under the door and into the bedroom.
3. As others have said, there are many steps within the building, which must be a major problem for some people or like us with heavy luggage.
4. Also commented on by others, on occasions, the town did not smell very good.
5. I personally did not feel that the “pop” music being played at the reception’s computer was quite right.

Would we bother going back – probably not
