Posada Herran is rather off the beaten path, in a quiet residential neighborhood. It's about a mile from the center of town and also the Altamira replica/museum. Most will want a car to get around.

We had room 201, two flights of stairs to the top floor. A very nice room, quite large, modern. You will have to watch out you don't bump your head on the rafters in a couple places, including in the shower, but that's a small price to pay for a comfy bed, the sound of cowbells during the night, an openable skylight in the bathroom, and pleasant views.

Breakfast is at 8am, limited choices that include slices of a home-baked goodie, a slice of a very tasty cheese, toast, juice, and coffee or tea. The rest of the house is for the three generations of family, wonderful, friendly people with whom you'll be able to practice your Spanish as they generously advise you on area sights and highlights, mark maps, etc. It is true that there's not much to Santillana del Mar itself, but we enjoyed lunch at the Uzquiza restaurant (recommended by Lydia, who runs the posada) and a couple hours on the streets and in the shops. More interesting is the surrounding area, which includes the Picos de Europa. If you like cabrales cheese, try the picon made only in Bejes and Treviso.

We really liked the Posada Herran and would stay there again.

Old stone house in Herran (which is still live village with farms and cows) with private parking. Santillana del Mar is cca 1.5 km through back streets and it is pleasant walk. I must say I was really glad to sleep in Herran, because except for tourists and staff serving them Santillana del Mar is dead open air museum. I would note that breakfast was just a little bit simple and I'm not sure that advertised price includes VAT, but still highly recommended.

top quality accommodation, top value, calm, and very friendly hosts.
stayed one night during my 30 day way of st.james walk in early may and it was the best 'worth the money' entire trip.
around ten minutes easy walk from santanilla del mar.
around fifteen minutes walk from the altamira cave.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Posada Herran...a beautful stone building but with modern bathrooms and wifi. The off-season rate is 31 euros per night. This is unbelievably good value. The only problem is that it is a few kilometers out of town (on the road to the Altamira caves) making it a little dificult if you don't have a car.
