“Very quaint little place”
Reviewed June 15, 2012

A beautiful little place run by a very friendly couple, Miguel and Sonja. The other staff (Christina? and one other lady) were also lovely and kept our room beautifully clean during our week's stay. My only gripes are that the wi-fi stopped working for a while, but I have to say that once it was reported there was a technician on site straight away. I would also have preferred an earlier breakfast time (don't think they started until 8.30-9ish).

The room we stayed in was in the old part of the house and was very beautiful and spacious. There was a fridge that you could fill will your own beer, wine etc and all the other usual facilities. The spa was great but remember to book your slot early as it gets busy when the hotel is full.

As for Garachico, I found it pleasant enough and it feels a lot more authentic than the fleshpots of the south. Being a vegetarian was a problem though and quite difficult to find things to eat in the local restaurants. The best restaurant was Ardeola for me. Don't think I would stay for a whole week again due to the lack of eating options.

Room Tip: Go for the more expensive rooms.

We spent there one week in April this year. The hotel is located right on the stony beach of Garachico with its famous tide pools. From the open roof terrace you can enjoy a great view over the beach.
Sonja and Miguel run their small hotel with a very personal touch. Nothing is too much trouble. From booking tickets to arranging trips, they're going out of their way to make your stay as pleasurable as it gets without being too invasive.
We liked our room on first floor. It was clean, spacious and well-appointed. Yet, we moved to another room after two days because the room was badly soundproofed. We could follow our neighbours' conversations even when they spoke in a calm voice.
The second room suited our needs much better. There was some street noise but we didn't bother. Free wifi was at hand all over the place, and guests can use the computer nearby the reception as well.
Breakfast at the Gara is a real highlight. Tasty with a great choice, always fresh and served very friendly.
Parking is sometimes an issue since Gara has no reserved parking. On Sundays and public holidays finding a spot in front of the hotel can be quite troublesome.
Bottom line: we enyjoyed our stay and would recommend Gara Hotel without hesitation.

We planned a chill-out week in a small hotel before the winter sets in but we certainly didn't expect to find ourselves in one of the nicest places on earth, owned and run by absolutely charming and helpful people. We had a fantastic stay: our room was spotless, comfortable and spacious, with a large shower room equipped with a wonderful spinning eco-shower. Sonja and Miguel were delightful - and fun - and, with Christina, went to a lot of trouble to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was varied and plentiful. The sun terrace is a perfect spot for relaxing between walks around this fascinating little town.

We stayed at the Gara Hotel for four nights and couldn't fault the friendliness of the owners and staff. They rushed out to offer us an umbrella when we were going out for a walk on an evening that threatened to rain. They gave us recommendations for places to eat and were generally incredibly friendly and welcoming. So we were inclined to forgive them when the hot water stopped working on our last afternoon and still wasn't fixed by the time we left the next morning.

The little spa has a huge and wonderful jacuzzi with its own little waterfall and a sauna. You can book it to have it to yourselves - the jacuzzi is free and the sauna only 6 euros. Well worth it. There's also a great sun terrace with a view across to the little fort, the sea and the volcanic rockpools. The two more expensive hotels in town don't have this seaview.

Downsides? The road between the hotel and the sea is busy and noisy. Much better to ask for one of the rooms at the back, which are lighter, have higher ceilings, and still have pretty views across the rooftops to the church. Even then, though, take earplugs as the church clocks chimes loudly from 7am to 11pm. Breakfast is OK, but the coffee is almost undrinkable.

Our room had a fridge with no minibar, which we liked as we could stock it with cheap beer from the supermarket with no guilty conscience. There is wifi in the hotel, but it didn't work in our end room, so I had to sit with my laptop on the terrace.

I loved the atmosphere of the Gara, but they need to fix their water pipes!

Room Tip: Choose a room at the back - they are quieter, lighter and have higher ceilings.

We went to this hotel by accident having been 'bumped' into it from a nearby hotel we were originally booked into. We were very impressed. A lovingly restored old house with loads of original features. Very friendly couple run the Gara and made us feel very welcome - get local restaurant recommendations from them. Beautiful room with huge vaulted ceilings - the semi open bathroom area might not suit those of a more modest disposition and if with friends make sure they are close friends! Breakfast is served in the courtyard and is very nice with fresh fruits, juice etc. The 'sun deck' overlooks the ocean and the fort on the promenade - great for people watching and sunsets. The small but perfect spa area provides a great place to relax after a hectic day. Parking is on street and can be busy during the day but you should get a spot come the evening.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed nice but ones in the house (as opposed to those round the balcony area) seemed larg...

Having gone a couple of years without a holiday we wanted to avoid anywhere large, loud, or impersonal. Gara Hotel run by Sonja and Miguel ensured we had a very relaxing and memorable break. They were friendly and informative hosts and the hotel was full of character with the best views in a picture postcard village. Our week at Gara was a delight largely due to their great "local" advice on sights and restaurants to visit. The sauna and spa were a nice bonus - they were nice and clean, as was the entire hotel (you do need to book/reserve). We were staying in an upstairs room with a great view over the harbour (room 11) and we didn't have any problems with noise. The hotel was very peaceful and quiet and we slept well throughout our stay. Gara hotel is very special and is a credit to its owners. We hope to return!
