We went back to Bens D'avall in September after 12 years with fond memories of a restaurant in a stunning location with good, simple food. The location and views are the same (naturally!), but the chef seems now to be hell bent on achieving Michelin star status. Lunch was a fixed menu with only a choice between beef or fish for the main course. The food is pretty but overly fussy and, frankly, the beef was a real disappointment. The puddings were excellent and the staff are friendly and efficient but it would in this humble reviewer's opinion, be so much better if the Chef stopped trying to be too clever.

Bens D'avall has been a favourite restaurant of ours for nearly 10 years. We have always made an effort to come back whenever we have been in Mallorca. We visited last week and it is absolutely not what it used to be. Rushed, clumsy service, set menu and on the whole, average food. We shall not be returning. Such a shame as the setting is stunning.

I am a little confused by some of the negative reviews here. This restaurant is great if you like great food, interesting flavours and lovely wine. Not to mention the best dining view on the island for Sunset.

This is a set menu restaurant. It's worth the visit if you want to experience Mallorcian Gastro dining. The service is relaxed yet informative, whether it be the food soure or the wines.

I suggest to those who want a la carte go elsewhere.

In the spirit of fairness .... The location is nice, we were told of the great view and sunset .. However once the sun set... It was pitch black.

We always look to have one "special" meal when we travel as a family. Bens D'avall was mentioned to us by a couple who had heard it was nicer than your usual restaurant.

On arrival, we looked at the menu outside the restaurant ... Seemed very limited, pricey but not an issue for a special meal.

We entered, sat down .. Then presented with the menu .. When I say menu, what I mean to say is a list of things we were going to be given. The only choice we had was the short menu ( €65 per person ) or the long menu for €75.

The short menu consisted of 3 mini starter dishes, followed by either meat or fish main, then 3 mini desserts. The long menu gave you both meat and fish main.

It is clear this restaurant is trying to operate under a veneer of high end gastronomic experience for its diners.

Sending at least €65 per head, you would have thought the bread would have come free...no such luck, a further €4 euros per person if you wanted bread.

The portions were minuscule, ridiculously so. The main was not much better. The gap between courses was far too long ... It seemed that the intention of the huge gaps was to enable you to consume further alcohol and keep buying bottles .. Which were also sillily over priced. We are not great wine drinkers and got a bit of a look when we actually asked for water.

At the end of the evening, we had a bill, for 4 people, just over €300 and we all left feeling hungry and on return to our accommodation all had a snack.

This is by far, the worst value for money meal we have ever had in over 20 years of family holidays. The restaurant feel they offer a great experience but fail in that task. This type of menu requires careful selection of ingredients and balanced courses to ensure the customer feels they have eaten ... Also the working assumption that the longer you sit there the more wine you buy is pretty poor ... Perhaps they feel that if you leave worse for wear on the drink, you won't notice or mind how little actual food you had consumed.

I am sure there will be those that rave about this establishment .. For those that do, I urge them to look out for similar gastro experience establishments and see the difference. The chef here was not Heston!

So each year, as a family, we go away for my fathers birthday. We always look for one of the better restaurants, and we are perfectly happy to pay a fair bit of money for a great meal.

We were told about Bens D'avall by a couple we met, they told us it was for 'special occasions'.

So we booked the restaurant for his birthday expecting a great meal.

We arrived at Bens D'avall and I do not for one second want to take away from the beautiful setting , the lovely staff, and the quiet, upmarket atmosphere.

Then the 'menu' arrived. Well it wasn't so much a menu, as being told what you were going to eat. You had two choices- a 'short menu' which was £65 for either fish or meat, or the 'tasting menu'. We all chose the short menu, already surprised at the cost for not having a choice in what you eat.

Their short menu consists of about 6 'courses'. I say 'courses' because each one was approximately two mouthfuls. We didn't worry too much after the starters, as we assumed the main course would be more fitting ,size wise , as a main course. It wasn't. It was finished in about four mouthfuls.

To have bread as a supplement was approximately €4 a head- for a family of four that's an extra €16 for something other restaurants charge €0.90 pp for! We were also given slightly wary looks when we told them we didn't want wine.

To cut what could be a long story, short, we opened a bag of crisps when we got in, and paid £300 for the privilege .
