“Our favorite place on vacation”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

We were here last year for our 25th wedding anniversary. When we had the chance to return again this past summer with friends, we were anxious to show them this place. We love the quiet beauty and relaxing atmosphere. The rooms are all gorgeous and very spacious, especially by European standards. We made reservations for dinner and it pleased our gourmet oriented friend we were traveling with. If you love the ultra gourmet experience, this is for you. If you like more ordinary fare it's hard to find something to eat. The desserts are wondeful though. The breakfasts are one of the best parts of staying here. It's a feast for the eyes and palate. AND the jewelry store next to the inn is a must see. Beautiful gifts and mementos for yourself and those back home.

Room Tip: The rooms upstairs that share a balconey are the best ones. There's places for a nap and just v...

Not only is this hotel in a beautiful location, outside charming Kobarid, with a magnificent view of the mountains, but the staff is extremely attentive and pampering - the restaurant is probably one of the best in the country if not the region. A little pretentious, but definitely worth it. The food was outstanding.
The rooms are tastefully decorated, maybe not the best water pressure in the shower, but the bed is very comfortable and the location is great for those looking to hike around beautiful landscapes - waterfalls and lush forests are nearby.

Looking for something special on our last day of holiday we came across hiss Franko on the Internet. There wasn't much info on the Internet but we though we would go with it as the food was recommended and we love to try food and wine. We were so thrilled we chose this place - the people were so welcoming, the food is incredible, we had a tasting menu with wine which was great value and delicious. The wine is also really good value and they are very knowledgeable and make great recommendations. We took some of the jam home with us, and went swimming in the river nearby on the family's recommendation, which was just the most wonderful day. I recommend Slovenia and particularly hisa Franko in the soca valley to all my friends. It's such a beautiful place, and a great find.

The hotel is rather basic – OK room (yes, watch out for the wooden bed frame), large bathtub, but the food and the wines are OUTSTANDING and the prices a steal. We had booked a “I love you” package including dinner for Euro 225 (for two!) and had an amazing dinner and very nice (and very affordable) wines. The nine course tasting menu was one of the best meals we ever had. We had dined in Ljubljana at one ranked 89 of the “Worlds best 50 restaurants” two nights before and Hisa Franko was ten times better! A MUST VISIT AND WORTH A DETOUR.

I had no expectations when I arrived in Kobarid this past weekend because my husband did the research and booking for our hotel. We arrived late at night and basically walked into the hotel and straight to their restaurant. The food there is AMAZZZZZING. The food is all fresh, local and organic. The flavors are phenomenal, the bread was so fresh and the olive oil is to die for. Somehow they manage to cook their meat so that you can't really taste any gamey-ness of it. My dad had their beef tongue dish and exclaimed it was the best ever and melted in your mouth!!!

We also stayed here for two nights. The room is very sparse, but complete at the same time. They have a small refrigerator in case you need to store stuff as well as a small safe. We had a jacuzzi tub room and enjoyed taking nice baths. My only complaint is the bed frame. It has a wooden bumper around the bed and I banged my shin into it pretty hard that even a week later I still have a bruise! Ouchie!

There is no doubt that the food and the service at Hisa Franko are excellent. Their location just outside Kobarid is perfect for hiking, biking, visiting nearby WWI historic sites and relaxing. Franko and his wife take great pride in their hotel and are deeply invested in offering local cheese, wine, meat and other products at both breakfast (which is included in the room rate) and dinner. The breakfasts were hearty enough to keep us going until dinner with local honey, jam, bread, meat and cheese. Also granola, yogurt and a good variety of fruit. Franko showed us his wine and his cheese cellar, which was really interesting. Service in both the hotel and the restaurant was careful, personal and attentive.

Our one warning is that the rooms are very basic. We stayed in the least expensive rooms in the "yellow house" and contended with a broken toilet seat, sporadic hot water, and very tight quarters. We didn't mind - we were only in the room to sleep - but one might find better value in town. But not better food. Being part of the Hisa Franko experience, watching the light change on the mountains from the terrace, receiving attentive, personalized service...these would have us return tomorrow if we could. We recommend Hisa Franko.

Room Tip: We were in Room 12 in the yellow house - the least expensive rooms. I'd avoid #10 - it did not...

Good evening,
thank you very much for your beautifull words and feelings you are sharing on Tripadvisor with others about your days at Hiša Franko,
I just wanted to give you a quick explanation about "poor rooms" in the yellow house:
we normally explain people that there is quite a difference in the quality of accomodation and in the space between the rooms in the main buliding(red house) and the 3 simpler rooms we have in the yellow house, that is why there is also quite a price difference. The yellow room costs 50 euros for 2 persons if you do not consider the price of breakfast(which is 15 euros per person). Since the whole yellow house is waiting for a complete adaptation we left those 3 rooms for people who really need a room for a simple overnight and is maybe also interetsed in dining in Hiša Franko. We tried to give them some nice touch with colours but for more we will have to wait for another "global" investment,
sorry for bothering+wish you a nice sunny summer
all the best
Melita, Hiša Franko

Having just crossed the border from Italy, this was our first experience of Slovenia and the welcome was warm and efficient. Although we chose this guest house for the restaurant (reviewed separately) the room was clean and comfortable and worked very well for us.
