We were recommended the restaurant as one of the best in Kobarid and one which is hunting a Michelin Star rating. Although the food was good it fell well short of our expectations especially at the prices charged. I would suggest you can do better elsewhere and save your money.

Room was ok but had no air conditioning so was quite hot. But the bathroom was just not good enough for this amount of money - small, smelly, damp, and hardly functional. Hotel staff were a bit grumpy but the restaurant staff were great and had no problem sorting my daughter's gluten free diet.

Stopped in the village after seeing the amount of outdoor activities this region offers on our way back to Munich taking the road less travelled. We extended our trip one day to include an unplanned rafting excursion. There is a lot to do including walking, bike riding, what looks like an amazing river with lots of options. The hotel was the only one of its type we could find and we came away impressed with the small town and the hotel resturant. The hotel it self can be left best said as functional with limited character. Room 205 had a small balcony and faced the rear of the hotel. Quite but needs a fan since there is no AC. Moving air becomes more and more important with advancing age. There is a nice uphill walk which takes about 15/20 minutes up from the town square to the Memorial to the Italian soldiers lost in the 1st WW. Great view of the valley from there.

Hvala means thank you in Slovenian - which we learnt after having repeated the question " how do you say thank you in Slovenian?" to the receptionist three times, and assumed he did not understand us as he answered Hvala each time. The hotel is in the middle of the small and charming village of Kobarid and is probably the best accomodation in the town. Clean, functional, adequate - not on the upper end of 4 star hotels but I slept well despite the thin mattress and thinner pillows. Kobarid is a short drive across the Italian border. Kobarid is definitely worth a visit as the Heritage Route walk starts from the centre of the town. The trail is about 5 kms, encompassing a moving and thought provoking war museum, a church on top of a hill with the Stations of the Cross leading up to it, and a mystically beautiful waterfall and river walk deep into the towering mountains that surround the village. You may not go to Kobarid for the hotel experience, but it is worth staying over in order to experience the rivers, mountains, kayaking, rafting, hang gliding, walking and the aforementioned Heritage trail.

We were looking forward to our stay at the Hotel Hvala, but felt like we chose poorly. The hotel presents itself as a charming four-star resort, but the decor is dated and our room was uncomfortable. To be fair, there may be top-notch renovated rooms, but our room was far from that. I am NOT a hotel snob...far from it. Let me start with the plusses: the hotel was very central, parking was easy and free, and the included breakfast had a nice spread of hot and cold items.

So, the negatives. Our room was quite uncomfortable. The bed mattress was rock hard...I don't mean firm...I mean painful-on-your-back hard. The bathroom was unacceptably dated: the toilet had cracked tiles under it and loose bolts that made it wobble. The grout around the bathtub was brown with spots of mildew. And the hand-held shower had no place to rest the shower head. We had read that there was no air conditioning, which is fine on pleasant cool nights...but the Mosquitos made it impossible to leave the balcony door open. So we slept in still, hot air...uncomfortable and unnecessary.

I desperately wanted to like this hotel, and I feel that with some investment and energy (and a bit of simple customer service) this could live up to its four star claim. As it is, this is a dated two stars at best. I cannot recommend.

Room Tip: The website shows updated rooms, so maybe there is a way to request one of those.

I stayed here in May 2013 on a fishing trip with my father, it was my first time to Slovenia and all the staff at hotel Hvala were welcoming and friendly. The food was delicious and although the rooms are a bit on the basic side, they were comfortable and clean. We had bad weather one day and could not fish but the hotel staff were jolly and attentive. Overall, despite the need for a little sprucing up, it is a very well run family hotel at extremely fair prices and I would thoroughly recommend hotel Hvala.

This is the only real hotel in town and it does the job quite well. I stayed here as part of a Rick Steves' tour. I was in room 204, which is the end room on the front of the hotel and has a small balcony. I had a room mate, so we had two twin beds, which were basic but comfortable. While the hotel is in the middle of town and on the main street, it's a really small town and really quiet at night. Breakfast was good and dinner in their restaurant was good as well.
