Have been to the Horse & Jockey on about 4 occasions over the years, always enjoy my stays,
We spent ( 4 Adults) only one night there on a Saturday 11th Aug. 12 as we were going to a family lunch in Thurles the following day, rate was very good for B&B, usually have bar food in the pub when we stay but this time we decided to eat i the restaurant, the service was very good but the food let them down, 2 of us had lamb cutlets, these were awful, tough and grisly, the other 2 guests were happy with their food, other than that we had a pleasant stay, we will be back, but not to the restaurant.

Room Tip: The upgrades are worth it, although the standard rooms are fine

A difficult one to call. The Hotel has made a great effort to compete in the market with the addition of the Spa and Fitness facilities, which are new from a previous overnight business stay I had here. Recent visit was booked aa two night stay as a couple.

Positives:

The room was large and modern and appealing to the eye. The food in the restaurant was very good and priced fairly. Likewise, the choice for breakfast was very good and above average in terms of quality. We had lunch in the bar and that was of a decent standard also.

The Spa & fitness facilities are an added bonus especially given that there is not a whole lot to do in the location, especially when in rains.

It has a nice coffee bar with a lovely range of cakes and pastries whch are made in-house. A nice touch.

Negatives (minor stuff really that could be easily addressed).

The bedroom temperature at night was uncomfortably hot (a theme in many hotels I know). A heavy duvet did not help. While the room has air con, when left on there was a loud rattling noise (as oppose to the normal running sound) that meant leaving it on was not a good alternative. So despite having a nice modern spacious room, not being able to sleep both nights on a relaxation break kind of spoilt things. Tip for hotel; supply a single white sheet to give customer the option to dispense with duvet on warm nights.

The hotel is a popular location for food with passing day trade. A vital part of business for any hotel, especially in tough trading times. But I think the attention to detail expected in a 4 star facility for staying customers, paying B&B rates is slightly neglected with that focus on passing trade. For example, There are plenty of seating areas in the lobby etc with tables we noticed being left uncleared for hours. At breakfast we noticed remnants of food (chips) on the ground from the night before. We managed to get served in the bar for lunch by a member of staff that didn't speak one word to us! I mean literally not a word. You'd expect at least, like, "hello, are you ready to order, is everything ok, can I get you any drinks etc"

So apart from the heat issue in the room at night, the other issues could be resolved with a bit of extra staff training and staff motivation.

The tripadvisor ratings does not have a rating between average and very good. I would like to rate the overall experience as good.

I would certainly consider staying here again. It jut needs to wow the customer a little more to make them feel special and want to return sooner rather than later.

We stayed recently at the Horse and Jockey hotel for 3 nights as a couple. The hotel has the style of a motorway hotel with a rather uninterested reception staff and not a very warnm feel to it. The room was great, very clean modern and despite a busy weekend it was very quiet. The wardrobe door which doesn't open was a little challenging! The only real criticism I have was Silk's restaurant. The pictures on the internet looked great, however when arriving for breakfast the dirty menu on display outside the restaurant gave me a bad feeling, rightly so. The restaurant was very shabby with smeared tables, smeared cutlery and drinking glasses. Left over chips from the night before could be seen squashed on the yip you guessed it smeared floors. If the restaurant had the same standard as the room all would have been great.

Thank you for taken the trouble in writing your review and you comments have been taken on board,
Regarding the restaurant, after a busy Sat. night it is obvious that a thourgh cleaning was not adhered to and for this I apologise. We are also in the process of renovating the restaurant which has got tired from constant use.
On the positive side we note your favourable comments on the bedrooms and food.

We stayed here for 4 days whilst travelling back from Galway to Rosslare. The positives are that the hotel has lots of separate seating areas, an excellent pool and gym facility. There are numerous conference rooms, and areas for people to enjoy a coffee or drink and have a chat.
However we found the overall ambience of the hotel disappointing. There was a real feeling that customers got in the way of the staff doing their jobs! The breakfast was good, but the service was truly scary - with one waitress barking at people if they wanted tea or coffee! The evening meal we had in the restaurant was good, though quite pricey but we were extremely disappointed with the offering in the bar menu.
Reception staff failed to acknowledge you on arriving, walking through the reception area or if going out for the day. There were no leaflets or information on anything going on locally in the area. The cafe staff were efficient, but whilst they stay open until 8 pm when we ordered a sandwich at 7.15pm we had the distinct feeling that we were interrupting the shutting up of the counter. Again, this was a very sad offering, with a tuna and red onion sandwich and some sad salad on offer.
The rooms were noisy both from the application of the card entry for the electricity which we had to take out at night, to the couple next door who were obviously enjoying themselves several times during the night!!
The room we were in for 4 days never saw a hoover, the shower in Room 326 was lethal - it sprayed absolutely everywhere in the vicinity, making the floor extremely hazardous.

Overall we would not stay here again as a holiday hotel, but can see that it would appeal on several levels to business travellers, staying overnight and not too fussed about customer service.

Room Tip: Avoid those looking over the quadrangle - people can see into your room, and you can see into theirs...

Thank you for your review.
My housekeeper has assured me that the bedrooms are vacuumed and checked daily so I can only presume that your room slipped through the system. We have some new trainee reception staff who possible have not yet the confidence to engage with customers as they pass by and this has been addressed. Our bar offers both A la Carte and sandwich menues with over 30 chioces and is usually very busy with lots of character.
At the risk of sounding too defensive, my staff are in general a happy and professional lot who are very customer focused but we take your comments on board.
There is lots of local information beside reception and we produce a weekly newsletter on what to do in the area.
