Description: Our restaurant is located on the shores of Lough Swilly, at Fahan, Co.Donegal, in the premises of The Railway Tavern which was formally the Station House of the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway Company (L&LSR)..Our Main course dishes are cooked to perfection on our wood burning Firebox Grill, just like in the old days were the engineers on the locomotives, used their firebox to heat their snacks !The Bar and Restaurant still have the old fires blazing which create a very cosy , snug room to eat or drink in ..

The railway tavern and firebox grill has great food and an equally great atmosphere. Its cosy and romantic and makes you feel like you are in your own little world. The hardest thing is ordering because if you've been there more than once (which I have), you know that everything on the menu is going to taste wonderful and when everything is that fab its very hard to pick just one thing. The food is wonderfully presented and cooked to perfection. Also, the staff are friendly and polite and we are never left waiting too long for food. Also lovely to watch the masters at work cooking food on the grill.

We booked a table for 6 o clock to take advantage of the early bird menu. The starters of goats cheese and garlic mushrooms were beautiful and the portions were a good size but not too big to fill you up. I had steak ciabatta for main course and my partner had sirloin steak, both steaks were perfectly cooked and really tasty, it was the best steak I ever had in a restaurant. The chocolate brownie dessert was delicious. The only complaints we had were that on arrival we had to stand around the bar for a while for someone to bring us to our seat even though it wasn't busy which made us feel awkward. Also the part of the restaurant we were in was cold but apart from that everything was excellent. It was great value for money and we will definitely be back again soon.

Visited will family for tea time special. I had the ceaser salad which was so tasty, next I had the chicken which just like the steaks had a chargrill taste to it. All my other family had steaks which they complimented. They said they where the best steaks anywhere they have every tried. We also had a bottle of wine and a few Guinness at the table. In total it cost 80 euro! that was 2 courses and all the drink for 3 people... very happly... the only thing I would comment on poorly is that they need to make the place bigger as it can be very difficult to get a table. Booking is a must!. It offers a cosy bar area too that you can sit by the open fire. Snug and cosy.

Came here for a family meal. First point is they could do with more lighting. It was very dark there and with the pot holes and the proximity to the pier they should try invest in some lights just for safety.
Was cosy when we came in and there were a number of fires lit and the back section was very busy. To the front there were three tables, two set and one to be cleared. Told the waitress we had booked and she went to check the booking. Came back a few mins later to ask the name again. Even though there were two tables there, we had to wait for the third to be cleared and given to us. One of the set tables was later filled but not the other. Our table was small and a bit cramped. We were given menus and asked about drinks. Water and a half pint. The water came right away but the half was a long time coming.

Our order was taken and we set for the wait. It wasn't very long but we had a chance to take a look around. The place was warm and there is wi-fi available. The password was posted on the wall. No phone reception just as a side note. There is a bar to the front and a bar man was on all the time. As mentioned the half pint took some time, I think it was not a bar issue, but the information not being passed to him. There were some large groups in the back section that were celebrating and took most of the attention, but I expect that seating there rather than the front would be better. The customer can be forgotten at the front.

Starters- Chowder, tomato and basil soup, scallops and half a rack of ribs.
I heard no complaints about the chowder, but it was praised for having lemon in it.
Soup was very red in colour and was very sharp in taste. Could do with toning down some.
Scallops were fine, came with small salad and pesto, which could do with a lot more oil.
Ribs were forgotten but were delivered quickly when mentioned. The vanished in seconds by the eater. I tasted one but nothing really stands out for me. They were fine, but I can't even recall the taste. Needs to marinate longer or more kick to the sauce.

Main courses: 2 steaks off the early bird and one from the A La Carte and one seabass.
Early bird steaks were supposed to be 8oz, but when delivered were larger. Appeared to be cooked fine to me (well-done and rare) and served with onion rings. The A La Carte steak was 12oz I think and didn't come with onion rings. Appeared to be cooked right for the eater. Sea bass was well cooked but the portion appeared small as it was 4 tail ends of the fish. Lots of butter in this dish. No taste from the chili or lemongrass. Sides were - champ, onion rings, boiled pots, mushrooms and chips. The only complaint was that the steaks could be better quality and that there were better at another location. Pepper and Bearnaise sauce were voted as very good though.

We ventured a look at the desert menu as one of the eaters said there were very good. One panna cotta with poached pear, creme brulee, berry crumble and another poached pair. One of the eaters is a diabetic so many of the deserts were out of the question, but the asked if the pear could be served alone, which they were happy to do and gave a bonus pear to make up for the lack of panna cotta. The one with the panna cotta was voted prefect as it was also served with raspberry sauce. I barely got a look at the crumble, it was gone it seconds. The creme brulee had a nice carmelised layer on it, but was very fluid underneath (I rather them set). Tasted very good and you could see the vanilla in it. Only bad point was that they forgot about our deserts so were were waiting a while. Tea had been ordered with it and it was gone by the time they remembered us.

Bill was just over €120 but there is a discount when you check in on Facebook, think it was 10%. We had to ask twice for the bill. One staff member seems to be very forgetful.

Overall it was nice, but if you are travelling for it you do want a bit more. Place could do with a good manager just to organise things a little better and chef has a bit more to work on. Staff like to stop and have a chat with the locals they know, which is fine but not the best form when you have customers waiting for attention. It is a nice spot and has loads of potential, but I like to see it do a bit more. Would be a grand spot for a meal and pints if you were staying in the area. Could easily sit for the evening by the fires enjoying the banter. If you are staying in the area, this place would hit the spot, just bring a torch for when you are heading home.
