“Charming Pension, Great Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2010

Pension Marianna was our home base for a 3 night stay in the Nafplio area of the Peleponese. It was the perfect location for experiencing the charming city of Nafplio as well as venturing out to some of the nearby sites such as Epidavros and Mycenae. We were traveling as a group of six and were very thankful to have a place that was easy to park our VW Transporter van.

There were many things that we loved about Pension Marianna. Our room was so neat! We were in 15 which was basically a stone room with it's own private little terrace. It was such a unique space and we thoroughly enjoyed staying in such a interesting room. it was great to sit out on the terrace and smell the lemon and orange trees literally blossoming right below our window. Also, compared to the other 2 couples we traveled with, our room had the most amount of space, both in the sleeping area and the bathroom.

We also thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast every morning. I am going to award Pension Marianna with the best Greek yogurt we ate on our entire trip and i assure you, we tried it everywhere we went! ;) The breakfast was always filled with freshly made pastries, delicious yogurt, and a variety of other delicious treats. The Zotos brothers who run the pension are also extremely friendly and ready to help in any way.

Finally, and honestly 2 of the most important things we look for when we are on vacation, the location and price couldn't be beat. We felt that Pension Marianna offered excellent value for the money and would highly recommend this location to anyone. Nafplio is a wonderful city and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

My husband and I spent 2 nights here in late May and can't wait to go back to visit the friendly Zotos brothers who run this cozy, cheerful, charming pension. Our room was spotless, beautifully decorated (lots of original stonework), and had a view of the city and harbor. The common areas of the pension are so inviting, scattered about the multi-tiered hotel. We spent several hours enjoying the spectacular view from the patio on the top floor, drinking local beer and chatting with other travelers. The excellent breakfast (included in the room price) was served on that same patio so you could feast your eyes on the Grecian landscape while filling your belly. I don't know how anyone could have a complaint about this place. The Zotos brothers were exceptionally accommodating and helpful...anything you needed, from parking advice to travel and restaurant recommendations were forthcoming. And the city of Nafplio is wonderful, with plenty of sightseeing, pedestrian-friendly zones, and lots of cafes at which to lounge and people-watch. We especially enjoyed the restaurant Mezedopoleio O Noulis, which serves small plates, one of which is fried cheese flambeed in Metaxa liqueur right at your table. We also had great seafood at a place called Savouras on the touristy harborfront. I cannot speak more highly of Nafplio and especially the Pension Marianna. We had a wonderful experience there!

We were greatly disappointed in our room. The room was very small, with little room to move and almost nowhere to put our two large suitcases. The bedding was very old and worn and the bathroom very outdated. The bathroom was also very small.

Service was very good and all our questions were answered. The Zotos brothers were very kind. The outside of the hotel was very pretty - especially the balcony and courtyards. We wished our room was as nice.

The hike to the hotel was a little steep, but manageable. Parking was available just above the hotel on the hill. We wished we had known where to park before we arrived, but were only told parking was "on the street".

I might try another hotel next time with better room amenities.

We stayed at Pension Marianna for 3 nights in May, in a very nice room overlooking the old town and port. Breakfast was ok, and actually quite plentiful compared to Greek standards, and the view from the terrace is simply great. (The terrace is also the perfect lookout point where the extremely friendly and helpful owners will show you where to go, where the nice restaurants are located etc. )
In a nutshell, we can only agree to all the positive things the other reviewers have written.

We stayed at the Marianna on Rick Steves' recommendation. He was spot on. This is a beautiful hotel with a relaxing courtyard. The Zotos brothers could not have been friendlier. They greeted us with such enthusiasm when we arrived at the hotel. The bathroom was among the nicest I've had in Europe. The breakfast was wonderful with cakes from a sister-on-law and mom's homemade marmalade.

The only downfall of the hotel is it's location at the top of the town. It was not a problem for us as we are able to climb steps easily. However, it might be difficult for some.

Three brothers run this small hotel perched under the eaves of the fortress overlooking Nafplio. They give great service at this clean well run place. Breakfast is on a terrace overlooking the entire town, and many of the rooms have beautiful views as well. Some rooms, however, are darker, worked into the cliff itself, so be sure and ask for a room with a view if that is important for you. A great base for exploring the town and the region.

We just returned from a four night stay at Pension Marianna. This is a place where you get great value for your money, and excellent personal service. The Zotos brothers (owners) are truly friendly and service-minded.

The hotel: The room price during our stay was 75€ /night and if you wish, you can in addition have breakfast for 5€ /per person. The breakfast though is very basic, but you get the day started with coffee, tea, bread, ham, cheese, yoghurt, cornflakes, muesli, and/or chocolate cake and cookies. We stayed in room 21, which was roomy enough(when comparing to Southern European standards), and had a balcony, overlooking the old town, the sea and also the Palamidi fortress. The room was very clean, well cared for, and cleaned daily. The only disadvantage was the hard bed, which also others have written in their reviews ;) The air-conditioning worked well to heat up the room during night time, and we got warm running water every time when showering.

Driving directions and parking: We rented a smaller car (Mercedes A-class) for four days from Budget, including all possible insurances for the price of 185€. Nafplio is located about 180km from Athens airport, depending on which route you choose. When arriving in Nafplio from Athens, you will pass a large parking area by the sea. Continue to drive towards the old town, passing by the parks, and then choose the Polyzoidou road up the hill. You will after the first curve find a larger parking lot on your left (Arvantitias square, above Arvanitia beach), but if you continue to drive up the hill, after the next right curve you will find about 16 cars parking area. This is immediately above Pension Marianna. If you continue upwards (a left and a right curve), you will find more parking spaces, and you’ll probably find many cars parked along the winding road too.

Eating out: You will find numerous restaurants, bars and cafés in Nafplio; some of them probably also “tourist traps” during high seasons. We got good recommendations by the Zotos brothers, and chose a few of our own too. At restaurant Omorfi Poli (along the sea front) we had three appetizers (potato balls with sundried tomatoes, fried cheeseballs wrapped in bacon, and tzatziki) and two main courses (oriental souvlaki) and three Greek beers for the price of 50€. At Noufara (at Syntagmatos square) we had a lighter lunch one day, including tzatziki, a Greek salad, a salad Prosciotto, grilled cheese potatoes and two beers for the total price of 28€. One evening we also ate at Omorfi Tavernaki (in the corner of of Othonos and Kotsonopoulou), which has traditional Greek food, served on simple cooking ware, but with excellent service. Here we ate us full for the total price of 34 €. Our favourite place though was restaurant Kipos (from Filellinon square up along Ethnikis Antistaseos), with modern interior design, and very good food. We recommend as appetizers their stuffed wine leaves, gourmet tzatziki and grilled haloumi cheese with tomatoes. This together with two main courses and a barrel of wine cost us in total 47€.

Sightseeing: In Nafplio we mainly walked in the old town, took the pedestrian path along the sea shore to Arvanitia beach, and also walked up to Palamidi fortress. To the fortress you can go by car, but we found the walk to be much more charming. As we had rented a car, we also went one day driving to the archaeological sites of Mycenae and then to Epidaurus, and drove the curvy road from there to Galatas and further to Ermioni. We intended to take the boat over to the island of Hydra, but there were no boats that day. Another day we drove the scenic road via Mili and Achladokabos to Tripoli, and then up to Loutraki and to Korinthos, seeing the canal that connects Peloponnese to the mainland, and driving along the beach to Kiato. What you’ll probably notice is that you won’t have time to see all the places you had planned, as the roads are quite curvy (except the highways), so it’ll take some more time than expected. PS. If renting a car from Athens airport, there is a kiosk on the opposite side to the car rentals which sells Peloponnese road maps for the price of 12€; this turned out to be very valuable for us, as we didn’t have a GPS.

Cruises: We heard that Pegasus Cruises (www.pegasus-cruises.gr) arranges one day cruises to e.g. the islands of Spetses, Hydra and Poros, but during the low season when we visited Nafplio, they only arranged these once a week. We would have wanted to visit Hydra though, based on read reviews.

Weather: When we visited Nafplio end of March, it was between 20-24 Celcius degrees daytime, but during night time it fell below 10 degrees.

All in all, Nafplio is a charming small town, close to many historical sites and it is a good base from where to make day trips close by. Pension Marianna will give you great value for money spent, with excellent personal service provided.
