We drove to the entrance, rather than climb the 999 steps. The Castle is really interesting with nooks and crannies to investigate - it is quite substantial. The views are beautiful and provide a great perspective of the surrounding area.

I love the climb up the 999 steps which had a different view from each bend....the castle itself is in excellant upkeep with an enormous amount of history which can be felt as you climb. The views are phenomina. there is also a road at the opposite side which can be driven up.

You have to climb up and it's worth it. Because you have a splendid view on a very nice town Nafplio on the one hand, and in the other hand overlooking the sea. Nafplio has an old town, with authentic narrow streets and domestic houses, with beautiful balconies and gardens with flowers. It's very nice place to stay for a weekend.

When you visit Nafplion you must go to the Palamidi Castle. On our visit we opted to get a taxi to the top and walk down the steps. Before we went down the steps we had a good look round and out at the views. We were told that Nafplio was the first capital of Greece (before Athens) and that the castle and fortifications were there for protection against raiders. When you walk around and delve into the little 'cubby holes' that remain and look through the slits in the walls you can just imagine what it was like back then.

There are reputed to be 999 steps going down - little in the way of hand rails so be careful and keep your pace slow - we tried to count them but got distracted on the way. If you go too fast your legs will be like jelly when you reach the bottom.

I have made this trip about 5 times and still find it wonderful.

An exhausting walk that will lead you to am beautiful panorama overlooking the area. Don't expect to see much of the castle, but expect to see a oot from the castle ! It is worth escaping the narrow streets to get a view on the intricated map of the old town.
