This restaurant is located in one of the little alleyways off the waterfront in the old part of Nafplio, very close to Syntagma Square. It's owned by a smart young Serbian who tries very hard to please, and works very hard to promote his tavern. The end result is that he draws the crowds to his rather small ground-floor eatery, and it often fills up and overflows onto tables placed in the alley outside its bougainvillea-covered front door.
We four tourists arrived early, because we'd heard that it fills up quickly. We hadn't booked, but had no problem getting a corner table inside. We were soon pinned there, as (first) a large group of touring school kids and their teachers arrived, and (second) a crowd turned up from one of those vast Cruise ships that had just docked in Nafplio that day. So, while the owner started by chatting to us about his food and his life ... he and his staff ended up being too busy to scratch themselves!
All the same, they did not miss a beat with their food and their service. We had ordered a selection of 'home-cooked' Greek dishes, just as the crowds began to enter. Yet our food arrived on time and well-cooked. The waiters kept our water topped up, and took our drinks orders without delay. We did feel just a little crowded in our corner that night, but not crushed. The noise volume in the room was high, but not overwhelming (a mob of schoolkids is always going to be noisy, and anyway they're not always going to be there). A Greek bouzouki duo arrived soon after the kids, and gave a good performance (the tavern has live Greek music every Friday and Saturday night.) The bill was presented when we asked for it, and it was not expensive. All in all, we agreed that the Taverna Byzantio delivered good food and was a worthwhile place to dine. Maybe not the quietist place in Nafplio, but that's what you expect when the owner knows how to promote his tavern.
