Words cannot adaquately express how absolutely beautiful the Castello aparments, studios and rooms are. We have been staying at this family run accomodation for over 20 years, we have stayed in all of the types of accomodation including the very modern new apartments on the top floors.
The older parts of the Castello are being modernised including installation last winter of plasma screen televisions, everywhere is spotlessly cleaned on a daily basis by the lovely Gabrielle, all have balconys with nice balcony furniture and are given privacy by the truly amazing climbing plant cover that the owner Christos has created over many years.
The new spacious apartments are really nicely furnished. No 21 has an open plan lounge/kitchen area with a pair of bunk beds on the one side, ideal for children. It has a nice bathroom with good size glass enclosed shower and separate bedroom with double bed and plenty of cupboard, drawer and wardrobe space with overhead storage for cases, good quality hangers and full length hanging which is often lacking in other places. There is airconditioning (free of charge) in the lounge area only, (studios and rooms have an airconditioning unit), ceiling fans would be a good addition especially in the bedroom but, it does have a high ceiling so the heat does rise. The private balcony off the bedroom and the lounge area has stunning views over the rooftops to the bay of Plakias and is nicely shaded by trees for sitting there at various times. There is also a large private rear balcony which is reached by stairs only used by yourselves, other mountain views can be seen from here, there is a pull-out dryer for your washing, all the other accomodation has a line or dryer including pegs so no need to carry these in your case. The kitchen is really well equipped, including a good size fridge/freezer, the studios and rooms only have a small one, there's even some bbq fuel for lighting the barbecue in the garden, which is there for use by anyone staying at the Castello.
The gardens are stunning, giving much needed shade at the hotest times of the year, Christos loves his gardens and is always prunning, watering and tending them. There is a lovely lawned area where your children can play safely. The free car parking is marked out under the trees keeping your car nice and shaded from the sun. Christos is fully aware that guests value peace and quiet and tries to ensure that other guests respect the tranquility, a whispered 'kalimera' can be heard when he greets those early risers! He even pushes his little motorbike to the top of the drive before starting it up when he goes to collect the fresh bread for his amazing breakfasts.
The Cretan breakfast is a small extra charge but, well worth it even if you don't take it every day, there's fresh bread and sometimes croisants, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, yoghurt, ham and cheese, butter, honey and jam, orange juice, coffee and tea, sometimes not all of these are available and sometimes there's even more.
There isn't a swimming pool but, guests are very welcome to use the one at the hotel situated just behind the Castello.
Christos lives on the premises so is never far away. He can usually be seen sitting under the shade of the trees ready to welcome you with a refreshing drink as soon as you arrive or chat about how you've spent your day and will always attend to any problem you have straight away. He's a mine of information about the local area, always ready to help plan your day with his winning smile and infectious laugh.
A very short stroll will take to the centre of the village where you can eat out according to your pocket from the gyros kiosk to the Alianthos Hotel and many others, none of which are rediculously expensive. There are car hire offices, travel offices, supermarkets and gift shops where all the staff are friendly and willing to help. There is a good bus service from the Square which takes you to local beaches, Rethymnon and places beyond, the buses are airconditioned, comfortable, reliable and inexpensive i.e. taking 3 buses from Chania airport to Plakias costs only 13 euros in total
We are already looking forward to our next holiday at the Castello.
