Ecstatic location, breathtaking view, staff very friendly, professional manager.Absolutely perfect at all!!!!Will come back soon...The reception was a little bit slow on arrival and departure.Everything else was just perect.Food very tasty, our room was very clean, there are three swimming pools,a lobby bar,a pool bar,a restaurant and a disco which unfortunately was not open at the time we were there. There was animation programm every evening as oriental show, fire show,etc...We recommend this hotel to everybody and we will go again soon.

Room Tip: Absolutely recommended!!!!

This was our 2nd visit to Kalypso.
First visit was couple of years ago, just my wife and I, and we loved it.
This summer, we spent 4 nights with our 2 kids. We booked a family room, and as soon as we got to the room, the smell was terrible, with mold in the bath and no ventilation. We asked to move to another room and were moved the next day to a more reasonable one.
As everyone here says, he location is one of the best in Crete, both for the hotel and the surrounding villages and beaches, but the hotel and especially the rooms urgently need a makeover.
To sum things up, if you're looking for comfort, look somewhere else, but if you don't mind a few ants here and there, enjoy the beautiful location of Kalypso.

Most amazingly beautiful location, with lots of activities. 2 star accommodation. But I wasnt happy with the staff. When we arrived there was no food for us and they refused to help us out, we were starving and hadnt eaten in almost 24hours.
They were adequately helpful in general. Our tub leaked, which i could get over but the whole bathroom facilities annoyed me, i like a clean and relaxing bathroom. It killed me i couldnt put toilet paper in the toilet. made me feel dirty.
No activity day or night to encourage holidayers to get to know each other. food was adequate and never Greek. there was ham in everything for the breakfast which ment we had little choice.
Very close to many beaches so that was great, no life in the town close by, which was a downer. restaurants in the town were amazing.
Location was beautiful and a must see, but be prepared for the life of a luxurious hostel.

First things first - would we go back - absolutely and we plan to do so next year. This place is an acquired taste: there is much that would normally irritate us (tired bathroom - charging for minibus to town - renting beach towels - awful tea and juices) but the location and staff worked their magic and this was our most relaxing and enjoyable stay ever. Every single member of staff from the manager downwards was charming and helpful at every opportunity - nothing was a problem. The natural swimming area in the volcanic 'lagoon' provided the most beautiful, restful and relaxing area we have ever experienced - the clear Aegean is the finest sea I have ever dived into. This area is truly special.

We were half-board and found all the variety and tastes we wanted (ok, we'll take our own tea-bags next time) and really enjoyed walking across the cliffs to one of the tavernas in Damnoni bay when we felt we needed lunch. The entertainment was pretty simple but we had a laugh and don't need or want discos. The restaurant staff, Alkis in the bar and everyone behind the desk all seemed to want to make us welcome. We had a family bungalow that was spacious with a staggering view (everywhere has a staggering view!) from the small balcony.

I can see how easy it might be to write negative things if you want perfection - facilities are 2* at best but the staff and location are something really special. We can only speak as a couple in late Sep early Oct who don't really want organised activity, just want to relax, but this trip really did the trick. If a big chain got hold of this place it would become very smart but a special location out of our reach. Sent texts to friends saying 'found a piece of paradise here'.

Pros: great location on the rocks with stunning views. Clean (compared to other beaches) water.
Cons: Poor value-for-money considering room condition and food. Shabby furniture and very old samitary ware as well as TV (luckily we don't have smell problems in WC).
No free beach towels (4 eur per week)
Limited (yet eatable) selection of food. We didn't experience problems with food mentioned in other reviews but were shocked (at first) by scarcity of options for breakfast. If you miss mealtime, the only food option will be frozen pizza from poolbar (and minimarket snacks), while nearest tavern will be in 30 mins walk.
Poor shuttle service to nearby Plakias village (rare and expensive - cost 50% of taxi fare, no one-way tickets). Overall it's the downside of location: you need 25 mins walk to get to Damnoni beach and 45 mins to Plakias (of tough mountain path)
Didn't have a prominant animation

August brings extraordinary, typhoon force winds with regularity to this area. We endured three days of flying furniture, drinks and astonishing sea tearing waterspouts. This "resort" hotel complex of maybe 3 star standard rooms is heavily patronized by package mid-Europeans, particularly Poles and remarkably there's no standard literature in English. That aside and no offense fellow stayers, you are captive to the hotel some kilometers away from Plakias and a regular beach. However, there are three generous pools - but sadly old and insufficient numbers of lounges for the busy times. The rude habit of people claiming lounges with towels and hardly using them all day should be ruled out. The minus and plus is the location. Isolated but having a remarkable setting on the sea cliff edge and also a very picturesque sea swimming and diving inlet tucked in between a cliff-like promontory and the mainland. Far nicer than the saltwater pools. Some of the rooms require steep walks and our room had appalling plumbing in the bathroom waste outlet with a dreadful smell. Other reviews have noted this so not sure if it is widespread. A partial renovation has seen attempts at improvements but more is needed, but so is money we heard. Service was ok but surly at poolside. Management are clearly trying their best but this is no luxury destination and if you didn't expect too much and wanted quiet - ok. Meals are in or out of your package however while buffet style, the kitchen does a reasonable job of presenting a reasonable variety of ordinary food and salads on daily rotations. Facilities generally in the south are lesser than the north.

Room Tip: Check the bathroom for smell first. Request close to main building or you will climb.

I am looking forward to my return to this special place at the end of May 2012.
It will be my 5th visit to the Hotel ( the last in Sept 2011) and my 9th holiday in the Plakias area of Crete.
The south coast of Crete is quiet, natural and restful. At Kalypso you experience a little bit of heaven, have time and peace to reflect, have the opportunity to walk and hike, experience good local food and enjoy wonderful views of sea and mountains.
Kalypso is the place for a quiet holiday swimming, reading and enjoying local culture and life

Room Tip: Rooms 170, 171, 172 have great views
