We chose the bed and breakfast Zur Schmeide in large part because we wanted to stay in Freiberg thanks to the possibility to use it as a base for some day trips (Dresden and Festung Königstein being a couple of the main ones) and its proximity to the temple (right across the street). On this score it was great and served our needs very well.
We were also very happy with the breakfast spread. We were never hungry and enjoyed the variety of bread, rolls, cheeses, meats, fruit, juice, milk, eggs, and jams. It was always all ready for us in the morning. This, too, was a highlight of our stay.
Other than that, though, the accommodations themselves were pretty average. We had upper-floor rooms that had slanted roofs, like one typically pictures attic rooms. It made it all seem pretty cramped and at 6'1", I bumped my head more than once. The room was nice in that four beds made putting our family of five in one room possible. The bathroom was tiny. It was extremely cramped. Everything worked, though. It seemed like the rooms could have used a little more cleaning, and things like the unplugged TV perched precariously on top of the wardrobe gave the room a little bit of a storage closet feel to it and with 3 little kids, was slightly disconcerting.
Finally, the host and hostess speak only German. Since it seemed like there was a need for communication, especially regarding arrivals after 18:00 and the time for breakfast and anything you really don't want in your breakfast, this might present a problem to some travelers.
While it would not be my first choice for a return visit, the positives cancel out some of the negatives, and should I need to, I would stay there again.
