It's a long story to say how we got to Varade (on bikes) ~ getting lost many times ~ but it was worth it to get to La Grande Menuere. We were so exhausted, and Jean-Pierre (who speaks ok english) was a kind and smiling relief to see! He has a large property in the country, and it is super quiet ~ amazingly so. He quickly helped us check in (we were the only ones staying that evening), gave us a very big room (the whole floor really) and let us relax the rest of the evening. The room, although decorated in a mix of colors and styles, is very, very comfortable. The huge bed was super comfortable, there is a small dorm-size fridge with decent glasses, a tv and lots of magazines. The bathroom is a skip away outside the room, but huge. Two basins and a spa tub that I needed desperately.
The view is out over the countryside, and we loved keeping the windows wide open for fresh air and absolute silence.
As this is a B & B, breakfast is included. As in many french homes, there was a plethora of bread, jams, fruit and juice, but it would have been nice to have some yogurt or eggs instead of another type of bread ("
