We have eaten at this restaurant 4 times now. The first 2 with French friends, the third time just my wife and I. Last Friday with four French friends . It was a thank you from us and coincided with 2 of them having 'special' birthdays.
From start to finish the service was excellent. The amuse-bouches were superb, as were the home made sweets and table decorations.
As regards the cuisine. Excellent. The crustillant of cod in beurre blanc sauce...was to die for.
Attention to every detail was taken by staff and the whole experience was wonderful.
It was a cool evening and we did not avail ourselves of the terrace overlooking the Loire.

A discerning French friend had suggested that we might enjoy a visit to La Closerie des Roses and he was absolutely right.

The cool weather meant that we could not really take advantage of eating outdoors on the restaurant's terrace and enjoy the vista overlooking the Loire. However our table by the window in the smallish dining room provided us with a view almost equal to being outside.

The room is decorated with pleasing simplicity; white walls and some lovely colour photographs of the area. Tables are attractively laid with yellow tablecloths, matching linen napkins and good quality cutlery and glasses.

While we made our choices from the menu we enjoyed a glass of kir and a complimentary selection of amuses bouches. As well as a-la-carte, there are four set menus ranging from 29 euros up to 60 euros; there are choices for each course plus a few supplements available on these. Three of us chose the 29 euro option while one of our party, who has a small appetite, was advised by the waiter to choose her two dishes from the a-la-carte menu as that worked out cheaper.

A pre-starter of a little glass of melon soup tickled the taste buds while our starters of a terrine of freshwater fish (mullet and zander) served with a creamy but light sauce were absolutely delicious. Two people elected for the Croustillant de cabillaud served on cabbage and with a very good beurre blanc sauce. This received very positive comments - while the other pair of us chose fillets of dorade, beautifully cooked with wonderfully crispy skin again this was very well received. A little platter of a couple of cheeses provided an interlude before our chosen desserts, one taking the sorbet route while we (wisely we felt) had a proper blancmange - more like a pannacotta - served with summer fruits; memorable!

The wine list was not over-long, unsurprisingly totally French but would not break the bank. Our bottle of Cremant de la Loire from the excellent local producer Domaine de Galloires was an ideal accompaniment to our meal.

Service was excellent and friendly throughout. An error with an incorrect main course was speedily resolved with much apology and therefore readily excused.

Coffees all round brought the bill for four of us to a shade under 170 euros - very reasonable for a meal of this quality.

The restaurant is slightly tucked away in la Meilleraie but has plenty of parking and is well worth paying a visit. We are lucky enough to live about 45 minutes drive away and will certainly be returning.

This is a friendly, relatively small French restaurant that focuses on providing very well-prepared, tasty and attractively presented meals.
The restaurant is set by the banks of the Loire and in good weather it is possible to enjoy a meal sitting on their terrace overlooking the river. There is street parking opposite the restaurant and, when the river is not in full flow, there is ample parking immediately adjacent on a slipway.
The ambience is not over-formal and it is a relaxing place to dine: if you are looking for “chic” and prices that go with more sumptuous surroundings, then look elsewhere. That said, the lay-out within the restaurant is smart and comfortable, with tables and seating providing plenty enough space; and our visit was on a Friday evening in high season when the restaurant was fully booked. All the other diners were French (a good sign) and it was clear that night that the restaurant was happy to cater also for well-behaved children that did not upset the relaxed dining ambience.
The waiters were very welcoming, attentive and pleasant, and appeared to relish being asked about the individual dishes on the menu. There was also a very good wine list, including a good choice of not over-priced wines.
As with many French restaurants, there is a good selection of differently priced, set meals on the menu or, of course, you can choose each course independently from the Carte. On offer were a number of locally-inspired fish dishes from the Loire, as well as a selection of excitingly prepared ‘alternative’ meat courses. Vegetarians are also catered for with at least two main course dishes but I would still check when booking a table.
Between the four of us in our party, we tasted and tested a good selection of the dishes on offer. I can honestly say that every one of the four courses we each had was deemed to be excellent, in terms of presentation but particularly also for overall taste. We also opted to have a sorbet between the starter and the main course, which on the night in question was grapefruit with gin which perhaps sounds a bit different, but which I thoroughly recommend!
We left the restaurant that evening feeling thoroughly satisfied in terms of the quality of the meals we enjoyed, the service and overall value-for-money. Highly recommended if you are staying in or near Varades.
