“As good as everyone says”
Reviewed September 28, 2013

We made our reservation very close to departure based principally on the reviews. Au Prince Grenouille lived up to expectations. Originally booked for six nights we extended to seven because we were enjoying ourselves so much.

Anne is a very cordial and welcoming hostess who is pleased to help in all kinds of ways. Her quiche dinners or salad plates make a convenient alternative to driving out for dinner and the very local wine she sells and decants for you at a sensible mark-up is decent. She is equally happy to let you picnic beside the pool which is very helpful as she does not permit residents to eat in their rooms.

We found breakfasts to be both ample and varied. On days when the baker does not deliver Anne bakes her own bread. Her jams and yoghurts are also excellent.

Le Manoir itself is set well back from a minor road and is generally very quiet - apart from some distant hooting of owls at night! It has the feel of and truly is a mediaeval manor house. The decor is a mix of traditional with some distinctive touches of modern and/or exotic and/or quirky (frog-abilia abounds). Our room was wonderfully spacious and the plumbing works well.

Our only word of warning would be that the stairs in the tower by which the guest rooms are reached are VERY old and characterful but mean that this would not be easy for anyone infirm.

Would we go back? Absolutely, we hope to.

Room Tip: If stairs are an issue, check which floor the room is on as there is no lift/elevator.

We booked this accomodation through the tourist centre in chinon. When we arrived we were greeted warmly by Anna and the dogs. We had bought our own dinner and were invited to sit by the pool or out the front to enjoy the view of the chateu, whilst enjoying a bottle of local red. Breakfast was great speaking to other travellers from around the world. The rooms are white unique in their decor but suit the souroundin

We stayed at le prince grenouille for one entire week in june 2013 and enjoyed the place and the hosts every moment. Ideally situated to visit castles, excellent restaurants, to make bicycle rides, and to just stay at the chateau itself. With a swimming pool that looks olympic in size, a park around with comfortable chairs, and well furnished rooms with lots of light and plenty of space. We stayed in the grenouille room (recommended!) that actually is nothing less than a pretentuous suite, big windows at both sides of the room, and a spotless bathroom. The hosts are generous and in good spirits. Anne sets the tone, at breakfast there is everything you may need, supplemented with everytime a different homemade cake as a bonus, and Anne pursues you the whole day to get to know your other wishes. She arranged a horse ride in the fields for my wife and sent a warm white cat to me to sit on my lap whilst I was reading a book in the park, the cat became yet another friend in the days to follow. Key words for the chateau should be: generosity, friendliness, humor, cachet, style, space, personal warmth. Guaranteed that you leave like friends and plan to return soon. We will, and thank you Anne....

The warm welcome and wonderful food were all just a bonus to staying in such a unique piece of history. We went with our 2 little girls, ages 6 and 8. We all slept so well and will never forget our stay in this special place. The room had windows on 3 walls and was nice and cool. The bathroom completely updated. I couldn't believe how clean the room was... Every window perfect and the sheets all pressed. The towels are a bit small and worn, but that is all I can think of that was less than amazing. We will look forward to another chance to visit. The owner makes everything from scratch... There are even ponies available to ride. You have to experience this place.

We stayed over for 2nights to visit many castles in Loire. It's a very old chateau from 1620 with different decorations in each 5 rooms. When arrived, we got a very warm welcome from Anne, the owner, and a cute big dog. One stepped in through the stairway tower, I can feel the oldie of the chateau right away. It's different from the look outside and can really tell the stories from 1620. I stayed at Bamboo room which is mostly decorated in Bamboo and woods. The room was clean and have everything we do need to use over the stay.

Breakfast is served in a big beautiful dinning room in red tone. I can't wait to step in and start a beautiful day to try more French Breads, homemade yogurt, and fresh fruit purée, along with famous goat cheese. I was also offered by Anne to have a traditional French meal with homemade quiche, fresh veg salad, homemade apple pie, and half bottle of local Rosé Wine. It was the best quiche I was very had in my entire life .. So delicious!!

Highly recommended to stay over and will definitely be there again for Loire Cauteaus and wines.

We just returned from our trip and we loved staying at Au Prince Grenouille. Anne was a wonderful host and we looked forward every morning to breakfast (I personally loved her homemade yogurt!) Our daughter played endlessly with the [large] young dog (Fotomet) and the cat. The pool was refreshing after a long day of visiting the Chateaus in the area.

We loved visiting Chinon, which is 10 minutes down the road, and seeing all of the rich history of Jeanne (Joan) de Arc.

Some basic information for beginner travelers (as we were): Air conditioning is rare in many parts of France especially in the older dwellings. There isn't any air conditioning here, but the nights are cool and the neighborhood is very quiet, so as long as your room lights are out you can open the windows and enjoy the breeze. The bed mattresses were not as comfortable as I would have liked, but not enough to lower my high rating of this wonderful place. I personally do not speak any French and Anne's English is fabulous. She also speaks fluent German as well.

We used Google Maps and our GPS in our rental car and we found the hotel reasonably easily.
