This was our 5th visit to La Closerie Saint Martin and as always is our little piece of perfection in a busy life. Apart from the fact that Kathi and Marcel are among the nicest people you could hope to meet, La Closerie is just the perfect place to rest and recuperate. The rooms are all immaculate and very tastefully furnished each with their own individual style. Dinner is a whole evening event with 4 delicious courses all home cooked and prepared from local produce, local wine and cooked by Marcel and Kathi. Dinner is taken with Kathi and Marcel along with other guests who are having dinner and is always interesting and enjoyable with guests from a variety of countries.

Both Kathi and Marcel are very knowledgable about the local area and all the various attractions and always happy to offer advice and help about places to visit.

La Closerie Saint Martin truly deserves a full star rating.

Room Tip: We have stayed in the cheapest room here and the most expensive. Both are very lovely. We just like...

We are used to travel to Spain by car every summer. Some 5 years ago we discovered on the internet the existence of this wonderful place. It is just about one day travelling from our home. Travelling is always tiring. But knowing that your room will be ready at the Closerie helps a lot in the hectic of crossing Paris. Once arrived, one can look forward to the hospitality of Kathy and Marcel and the country silence all around. This is an excellent stopover on a long trip (2200 km), where one can join the table de hôte, talk to other people, enjoy other perspectives on life and in the meanwhile eat a wonderful meal, cooked by the owners. Local wine is delicious and abundant. The 10 or so times (once for a few days) that we have stayed at the Closerie, have never been disappointing. During my work life I had to stay often at large, unpersonal, world chain hotels. This is the precisely the opposite: small, local, warm and personal. If this is what you value, the Closerie is exactly the right place for you.

Before you finish reading this review stop right now and book your room you won't regret it! Marcel and Katharina are the perfect hosts and they have the most wonderful b&b. Breakfast is delightful with their wonderful homemade jams and the rooms are large comfortable and very French in decoration. Be sure to stay for diner as Marcel's cooking is excellent (think modern French cuisine) and they both make for excellent company. All in all it gets 5/5 don't miss out!

After visiting the Closerie in the spring of 2010, I always said I wanted to come back. Partly because the area is lovely and I wanted to see it in the summer and partly because the hosts, Marcel & Katharina, are so wonderful.
I finally got back to France this July (2013) and made a special trip to this area just to see them again! And it did not disappoint.
I was by myself and I feel that the Closerie is the perfect place for a single traveler. Every evening (except Thursdays) you are given the option of having dinner at the Closerie with all the other guests - you always meet interesting people! And the dinners are incredible and such wonderful value. Plus in the summer, it's all alfresco. It's perfection as the golden sun sets, and the white stone of the courtyard glows - it's a very magical spot.
I stayed in 'Le Prieur' and love love loved this room. It was spacious, CLEAN (all their rooms are spotless) and had lovely windows that opened over the courtyard and quiet main street of the village. I loved my views of the rooftops of Ligre and laying in bed with the warm summer breeze drifting in. The only problem with this room (and the Closerie) is I never want to leave!
Breakfast is outside in the summer and (like dinner) lovely and tasty. They make wonderful homemade jams and a granola that I have been craving since 2010!
The location is also wonderful. It's quiet and a short drive to Chinon. There are many chateau & wine caves nearby. Marcel & Kathi are happy to help you find your way and make suggestions.
All in all, I will always be coming back to Chinon & the Closerie to not only see the area but the people I now consider friends.

This was our second visit to La Closerie and we cannot wait to return. Katharina and Marcel are perfect hosts who discretely ensure that all their guests enjoy their time with them. "Our" room had every comfort we needed and we slept well after the activities of the day The scent from the jasmine growing on the wall in the courtyard drifted through our window in the evenings - rather special. Sharing the dining table, enjoying excellent meals with our hosts and the other guests in the courtyard makes for a perfect evening. During our stay we met people from eight other nationalities and enjoyed good humour and interesting conversations with them. La Closerie is a very well run chambres d'hote, a perfect base to explore this lovely area of France.

We stayed with Katharina and Marcel in 2012 and enjoyed it so much that we come back this year.
They are a very frendly couple and have a very nice B&B. We enjoy everything there, service is excellent, food is very good.
The house and the courtyard is very nice and quiet. There is an atmosphere in the house is very calm. When you come back in the afternoon, after touring Loire, you can just sit in the courtyard and relax with a book and if you like you can share the experiances from the day with other guests and maybe get an idea of what to do the next day.
We can very much recomend this B&B to everyone.

We stayed here for two nights during a road trip through France last month and wish we'd stayed longer. Strongly recommended by close friends, La Closerie Saint Martin still exceeded our expectations and was by far the one place we stayed that I look forward to visiting again. A peaceful and beautiful property in a rural setting a few kilometers from Chinon, it is close enough to visit the main sites of the Loire Valley yet far enough to enjoy a break from the crowds of summer. And like many other reviewers here, we found Marcel and Katherina to be incredibly hospitable, providing us with great travel suggestions and taking the time to engage with each of their guests. Not to mention the great food they prepare. We had planned on having dinner there on the evening we arrived and then exploring other options the next night. But after an exquisite 4 course meal prepared with all local ingredients, we knew we had to repeat the experience the next night. Both evenings started off with a glass of local wine in their impressive, ancient wine cellar before all of the guests proceeded to tables in the charming courtyard where we all shared experiences over dinner and more fine wine. Loved every minute. Tthe breakfasts: fresh breads, meats, cheeses. yogurts, cereal and pastries, served in the same setting were also fantastic. And the rooms were comfortable and clean. Again, I would recommend this place without hesitation and hope to return for a full week next time.
