When we've visited Seefeld in the past, we've stayed at large hotels with pools and other facilities but the reviews of the Helga were so good, we decided to try it.
As many point out, being met personally by the owners, dressed in their Tyrolean gear, is pretty unusual.
Our room was sizeable with a separate seating area and the fair sized bathroom albeit with just a shower. I must admit, I missed a bath after hiking one mile too many but then again, a shower was more refreshing in the heat. There was a tiny balcony but it could accommodate us both and, best of all, the sun never seemed to hit the room directly, keeping it cool despite the heatwave outside. Never go for a south facing room in summer, especially in a country where air conditioning is anathema!
There was a mini fridge, a comfy couch and plenty of room to spread out. Outside the hotel there was a nice seating area to relax after dinner although the short walk into town tended to encourage us to go out for a stroll and sample a different bar/cafe each evening.
The food was excellent, most especially dinner. The choice was very limited, just two main courses, but we liked everything we ate. Breakfast was nice albeit a smaller range of choices than that offered by larger hotels but more than adequate. I would ask that they consider offering wrapped crisp breads as the ones on offer we're unwrapped and therefore sometimes soft. Packed lunches were almost too generous - one roll each would have been enough!
All the staff were friendly, speedy and a joy - especially Franz himself who had a wicked sense of humour. The wine list is great and local wines are really reasonably priced.
Overall, this was a great experience and excellent value for money. Did we miss a pool? Well yes, maybe, but we simply relaxed in town sipping Aperol Spritz and watching the works walk by.
My only "negative" was the fact that we were asked if we would share a table at dinner which we agreed to albeit reluctantly. It transpires that others in our travel agents group had also been asked but declined. Sharing your meal with strangers is perhaps a bit daunting at first although it can be fun. Just be prepared in case you're asked the question.
In conclusion we would definitely return to the Hotel Helga and recommend all large hotel addicts to give it a go - it may well wean you off pools for ever!
