The Seespitz offers, for guests, cake in the afternoon. These are elegant things, carefully crafted and which look hugely appealing. The trouble is they don't taste of much and are a little style over substance. What goes for the cakes can also be said about the hotel itself. It's clean with a modern feel; the staff are efficient and welcoming; the facilities are impressive. But the trouble is that the place lacks - in my view - a soul: there's no real character to it, no warmth and no feeling of being in something other than a hotel. The bar, for example, is in the reception area (or perhaps it's the other way around) which is different but when having a quiet drink before dinner do I really want to watch the receptionist going about their business? There's also no lounge where you can simply read a book in peace and quiet (we ended up using the relaxation area in the nude part of the sauna which was pretty empty most of the time). Our room (121) it must be said, was an aesthetic nightmare. Although recently refurbished it was poorly designed we thought with a discordant colour scheme (lime green 1960s swivel chairs, brown sofa, walls in cream and red). The beds weren't locked together which meant that they could (and indeed did) drift apart. Efficient walk-in shower which when used on 'full' had a tendency to flood the rest of the bathroom; separate WC. Small TV with limited channels (but who goes on holiday to watch TV?). Room 121 (north facing) had a view of the mountains which could have been improved if the trees in the neighbouring property were cut back. The balcony was a disgrace - an expanse of nothingness apart from two solitary chairs and which overlooked the car park. The facilities are good: heated outdoor pool, massage pool (overly hot we thought), weights and multigyms and two sets of saunas - for the clothed and unclothed. The latter were not overly well-frequented (except by us) and we pretty had it to ourselves. The nude saunas were larger (two Finnish, one at 65 degrees, the other at 90, herbal steam bath, impressive showers, indoor and outdoor relaxation areas. Various treatments were available and we can testify to the benefits of the Swedish massage. The restaurant was pretty good offering a huge assortment at breakfast and even more at dinner. Breakfast was buffet style but they could cook what wasn't there in the egg department. Dinner was equally impressive - 5 courses - with a truly mammoth choice from the salad bar - all the usual suspects but also meat, fish, prawns and on and on. Some of it (we thought) tended to be recycled from mains the night before but nothing wrong with that. The soup was invariably beef broth with added dumpling/noodle/pancake. Choice of three mains and two desserts and cheese. All the food was to a high standard and sometimes showed real flair and sytle, which compensated for the tinned peaches and ice-cream masquerading as peach salad. Staff were accommodating, helpful and friendly. Overall then not a bad hotel. My criticisms at the start of this review can't detract from what is good, and there is much to compliment the hotel on. But the lack of a heart, of a soul, does give the place a corporate feel that no amount of happy staff can eradicate. I suppose the best test is whether you'd be happy to go back. Despite the enjoyable time we had I'm afraid to say that we woudn't return. Finally, choosing a room. Those north facing don't have much of a view (at least those on the first floor don't) and can be vulnerable to traffic noise. Those facing east do overlook the mountains but suffer from also having the main road running past them. Those to the south or west, overlooking the lake, are probably the best.
