We thought of taking a quick break and visit Omkareshwar & Mahakal temple at Ujjain (the two revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva ) . Mandu was a natural choice since it was in close proximity. Courtesy MP Tourism portal and since this was a sudden trip , without wasting any time , we managed to book Malwa Retreat online for 2 nights ( 11th & 12 Jan , 2014 ).

Considering the place and amenities , the tariff ( INR 2138/- per night incl tax ) seems to be justified for a AC room ( double occupancy ) including breakfast (please do not expect any spread for break fast , this is very simple Puri Bhaji / Poha etc ) .

The hotel is quite basic but functional and maintained well. I found the hotel staff to be quite good . They were really helpful and friendly. However , I felt the food menu is little over-priced.

Overall , this was a nice experience & I would certainly recommend this place unless one looks for a star hotel comfort . However , I guess the choices are not many there at Mandu.

Room Tip: I guess AC rooms are well maintained.

The hotel is run by the state tourism department and is a basic budget option if you choose to spend a night in Mandav. The tariff is cheap (starting 1300 Rs) and that makes it a good value for money proposition. The rooms and bathrooms were clean but the property as such looks a little run down. The food is basic but very good, if you want to have a homely meal, its a really good option and considering the options that are out there in the town of Mandav, its really good.

From standards outside of a town like Mandav, its pretty below average. But is probably the best option in Mandav and is a good value for money.

This hotel was better than we imagined for the price. A double was 1290rs inc breakfast and was spacious with a small balcony overlooking the gorge and a watering hole. The fittings were old but the bed was comfortable with clean linen & good pillows.

The staff were friendly and helpful and encouraged us to try different things for breakfast.

There are power cuts so bring a torch. it's a short walk to the village centre where there is a beer & wine shop and a couple of restaurants. We enjoyed the thali at Shivani - although the place lacks atmosphere, the food was good. There is another restaurant further along which looks smarter and is aimed at tourists but was disappointing with bland overpriced food.

Mandu was a great place to spend a few days as it was quiet and we could walk to all the monuments. The 10km round trip to the furthest group was along quiet lanes and was very enjoyable. We were also impressed with the upkeep of the monuments.

Please ignore the many requests for one pen, chocolate or rupee from the kids - if no one gives them stuff they will stop the begging.

I strongly recommend Malwa retreat. Firstly its easily accessible. If you don’t have a cab and want to use the local transport, Malwa Resort is on the way to the Mandu bus stand. Secondly, the people are nice. They may not be the most informed but there are keen to help. Food is good and the cook quickly accommodates your request. Overall - Nice

This property is well located; however the Malwa Resort which is 3 kms further to the Retreat, has a better complex. The manager and staff are quite indifferent and lack the usual hospitality of MP Govt hotels. Food is okay, but better than what is offered at Hotel Shivani. We had our own car for sight seeing ; anyway, on enquiry we found that locally, a car can be arranged for 300-500 rupees. There is no refrigerator in rooms and one cannot avail hotel fridge for personal use. AC rooms should be avoided as the AC is noisy and will awaken you in the middle of the night with a shuddering noise. There is a dressing room outside the bathroom. You will need a torch as there was load shedding for few moments several times. A candle was kept but the staff refused to give a matchbox stating they will start the generator.

Room Tip: The AC units are noisy and anyway, if one is travelling in winter, there is no need of AC. All the r...
