“great location, no service”
Reviewed April 13, 2013

We stayed here end of February 2013 during 5 days. We had booked ahead and were pleased with the location. We had a room in the concrete building facing the paddy fields; amazing views and great to sit outside. The restaurant has also paddyfield views and the food is nice, (for India) good pizza's and pasta's.The service of Mowgli is a bit of a disappoinment; rooms did not get cleaned during our stay, clean bedsheets had to be asked for and the staff has no clue about service. They burb at your table, are sometimes quite rude and certainly not very attentive. But in comparison with other lodging, Mowgli probably stays one of the better options, especially since half of Hampi got demolished (just before our arrival). We would not make reservations again (apart from the bussiest season maybe), since we overheard how much cheaper rooms are when you simply come and ask for it.

Room Tip: We had a room in the concrete building facing the paddy fields; amazing views and great to sit outsi...

I was a little nervous having read some of the reviews of this place but was pleasantly surprised:

- The rooms were cleaner than some of the pictures here indicate - not bad at all
- The little pink cottages are delightful - and having the outside space with the swing beds is great
- Stunning views from the restaurant
- Great location
- Pretty good food
Overall however this is a really nice base for exploring Hampi - very relaxed

Room Tip: Look for the cottages facing the river, #17 onwards

Mowgli is tucked away at the end of the road with great views of the river and rice fields. The restaurant, operated under a third-party, offers a good selection of Indian and Continental foods. Check-in was quick and painless.

Having said all of that, there are a few things to note. The small thatch cottages need to be cleaned every day. When I arrived the place was messy and the sheets needed a change. There is no sink in the toilet and the constant power cuts in these parts will leave you in a pool of sweat for most of the day if you choose to relax in the room. They really need a generator for the cottages and constant upkeep.

The prices are fair. And there are a lot of multi-cuisine restaurants to choose from down the road. As well as good oppurunities for sightseeing and rock climbing. The area is peppered with giant boulders right out of the Flintstones.

An enjoyable trip. But do yourself a favour and come during the cooler season!

We stayed at the Mowgli Dec last year. It was one of our many stops on a 13 week adventure of India. The guest house is on the island side of the Hampi and is just a short walk from the ferry drop. It's set in tranquil surroundings with views of the boulders, river and rice fields. Absolutely stunning in December. We stayed in one of the cottages facing the rice fields, they are concrete built with thatched roofs. Each come with their own Swing bed hammock just outside the gazebo. Beautiful from the outside but quite basic inside but everything you need for a good nights sleep, including mosquito nets. On the down side but def not a negative, electricity is a bit hit or miss, but this is Hampi and many other areas of India so you get used to it. The food served in the restaurant is very nice and staff are helpful and friendly, as was the manager. They have an outside stone oven where you can watch food being cooked. There are two seating areas, a dining area set with tables and chairs and a lounging area with a cushioned floor and low bench tables right opposite the views, this area is softly lit in the evenings adding to the beauty and relaxation. You can't miss the amazing sunsets from here.
We plan to spend longer at the Mowgli when we visit again, unfortunately our stay was only five nights as we were moving on to another area in India.
Tips:
( ferry costs are 10 rps per person and 5 rps per back pack) last ferry stop is 17.30pm although they can run until 6.00pm..always ask.)

There is an alcohol ban in Hampi so take your own with you as the nearest place to buy any is a tiny shop in Hospet which is a bit hush hush.

Take a tuc tuc to the Hanaman Temple and Climb the 570 steps, the monkeys up there alone make this worth a visit.

Take a river trip in a round boat to explore the ruins alongside it, 250 rps per person, very interesting.
In fact Hampi is an amazing place, there is so much history there it's like stepping through time. It's a photographers heaven and so beautiful. Can't wait to return.

If you like yoga the Mowgli runs daily sessions.

Mowgli Guest House is a really friendly, chilled out place to stay in Hampi. The rooms are good value, the views are stunning and there is a decent restaurant attached as well. Recommended and the staff were very helpful as well.

Pros
-Views across the paddy fields and the river yonder. Swing is awesome.
-Good mosquito protection using nets
-Peace and quiet as cottages are spaced by small paths (but only if your neighbours are likemindedly peace-friendly :P). Perfect for some nice book reading.
-Just about ok food in the in-house restaurant - a chicken and tomato pasta cost 160 and was not exactly the thing I was hoping for (see below)

Cons
-Service is given as a matter of privilege - ask for a normal water refill for taking out for sightseeing and they will refuse saying only mineral water is provided at a cost. No daily morning drinking water refill either. Beds and the swing not cleaned every morning.
-Restaurant service - after a 25-30 minute wait, I had to myself go upto the waiter who was busy explaining his multi-lingual skills as I overheard to other guests. Had asked the pasta to be more spicy than usual, but it was all ignored.
-Bathroom was real dirty which wasn't apparent when I first checked. Flush was leaking from the main hosepipe. Made acquaintances with a frog and a roach across 2 nights of stay (which isn't really unexpected I think in a place near the river)
-At both checkout and checkin times, the wait was interminably long - 20-30 minutes. Time of their guests is not exactly the management's top priority. Part of this has to do with the lazy village surroundings, but then running a business and satisfying customers is the job of a hospitality industry businessman and such laxities are better avoided.

Room Tip: Goes without saying to ask for a paddyfield view abutting the river. Make sure to check the bathroom...

Mowgli Guest House is well-kept and comfortable. The rooms are quite spacious, and the restrooms are clean and well maintained. Located at the end of the road, it's a 15 minute walk from the ferry point in Virupapur Gaddi. Some cottages overlook the paddy fields and have awesome swing beds outside. Perhaps a little more expensive that other places, but the comfort and cleanliness is worth it. The food is great too!
