Hotel Mayura Bhuvaneshwari is a govt-run property in Kamalapur, close to Hospet. It is one of the closest budget hotels to the heritage town of Hampi. Public transport such as buses and auto-rickshaws are easily available right outside the hotel. The bus stop is a short walk from the hotel.
The hotel is about 11-13 km from the railway station and the scheduled time of arrival of the Hampi Express (from Bangalore) is 7:40am. You could hire an auto-rickshaw or a cab from the station to the hotel (Kamalapur). Another option is to walk a little to the closest signal and catch a ride on a shared auto (fat-fat/ tuk-tuk style). If you wish, you could also strike a deal with a cabby for a full-day tour of Hampi starting at the station itself, like we did. We preferred this option because we were travelling with senior citizens and they had extra luggage.
We reached the hotel at around 8:30 in the morning and the staff (Mr. Maanappa) was kind to have provided us with one room to freshen up and get going. The second room was made available when we got to the hotel in the evening after a day's exploration.
We reached Hampi 2 days before the annual Hampi Festival (unfortunately, we did not know about the event until we got there; the fest is usually organized between 27-29 an and was preponed this year due to some political issue).
Mayura is a basic hotel (perhaps better than other smaller ones available in that area); depends on your pocket of course! We paid 1600 for a semi-delux room per night.
The morning we arrived, the hotel was a little messy because they were renovating a little in prep for the fest and many rooms were unavailable (due for the paint job), as the hotel was to cater to the entire tourism group that was arriving the next morning for the festival.
They have a restaurant that serves all meals; it doesn't have too many options available though. The food is ok; just don't order too many fancy Mughlai dishes on the menu (butter paneer and such).
It didn't look like they had dedicated staff for house-keeping, but, the service was prompt so, it didn't really matter.
This is a hotel-focused review. You could write to me for other tips about Hampi in general if you wish.
[My husband and I travelled to Hampi from Bangalore 2 weeks ago (Jan 2014) as a family with my uncle and his wife.]
