Hotel Mayura Bhuvaneshwari Kamalapur
Ranked #5 of 6 Hotels in Hampi
Reviewed January 21, 2014

Hotel Mayura Bhuvaneshwari is a govt-run property in Kamalapur, close to Hospet. It is one of the closest budget hotels to the heritage town of Hampi. Public transport such as buses and auto-rickshaws are easily available right outside the hotel. The bus stop is a short walk from the hotel.

The hotel is about 11-13 km from the railway station and the scheduled time of arrival of the Hampi Express (from Bangalore) is 7:40am. You could hire an auto-rickshaw or a cab from the station to the hotel (Kamalapur). Another option is to walk a little to the closest signal and catch a ride on a shared auto (fat-fat/ tuk-tuk style). If you wish, you could also strike a deal with a cabby for a full-day tour of Hampi starting at the station itself, like we did. We preferred this option because we were travelling with senior citizens and they had extra luggage.

We reached the hotel at around 8:30 in the morning and the staff (Mr. Maanappa) was kind to have provided us with one room to freshen up and get going. The second room was made available when we got to the hotel in the evening after a day's exploration.

We reached Hampi 2 days before the annual Hampi Festival (unfortunately, we did not know about the event until we got there; the fest is usually organized between 27-29 an and was preponed this year due to some political issue).

Mayura is a basic hotel (perhaps better than other smaller ones available in that area); depends on your pocket of course! We paid 1600 for a semi-delux room per night.

The morning we arrived, the hotel was a little messy because they were renovating a little in prep for the fest and many rooms were unavailable (due for the paint job), as the hotel was to cater to the entire tourism group that was arriving the next morning for the festival.

They have a restaurant that serves all meals; it doesn't have too many options available though. The food is ok; just don't order too many fancy Mughlai dishes on the menu (butter paneer and such).

It didn't look like they had dedicated staff for house-keeping, but, the service was prompt so, it didn't really matter.

This is a hotel-focused review. You could write to me for other tips about Hampi in general if you wish.

Our stay in this KSTDC hotel was an average experience. Rooms cannot be termed as spic-n-span but were just tolerable.
I must mention that the manager Mr,Deshmukh was amiable and very helpful.
Food is obnoxious and intolerable. Very strong NO for the food. We tried the Hampi Restaurant adjacent to Hotel Varsha near the bus stand and found it to be OK. I cannot deny that the OK food @ Hampi Restaurant seemed to be good after eating the stuff @ Mayura Bhuvaneshwari.

Hotel Mayura Bhuvaneshwari is a good option for a tour to Hampi due to its proximity to the ruins.
I feel that the best strategy to visit the attractions is to be out early in the morning and try to be back to the hotel by lunch. Based on the motivation of the group another trip can be taken near to sundown.

Stayed here for two nights in Dec 2013 Hampi lacks good hotel options. If you have to stay in Hampi, there aren't many options better than this one. If you want anything better, you have to goto Hospet or Viruparur Gaddi. We needed a place reasonably close to the ruins so that it is easy to commute back and forth from the ruins to the hotel. We had a 5 year old and sprawling Hampi ruins can easily tore him out. So having a hotel nearby was a must.

Pros:
- As mentioned above, if you need a good family friendly place within a km from the ruins, you have to pick this place. There is simply no other alternative.
- The property is quite clean and spacious and there is plenty of parking space and open ground for the kids to run around
- The rooms are relatively clean.
- Tariff is cheap

Cons:
- Service is pretty lethargic. The restaurant opens only about 30 mins to an hour after the advertised opening time.
- The food is bad. If you stick to dal and rice, you can get by without doing too much damage to your system.
- The bathrooms are nothing more than barely acceptable level of cleanliness. The bath area has no separation. This is a problem with all govt run hotels. One bath and the whole place is flooded.
- TVs hardly ever work and the picture quality is very bad. There is very limited channel selection.

Value for money and very clean for a KTDC accommodation. Manager is helpful. Good location and pleasant stay. Food is average. Plan your stay ahead and book. Difficult to get good stay in Hampi on weekends due to its proximity to Bangalore. Hospet has few Hotels and it is just~10km away.

Room Tip: Select rooms that face garden. Suites are very spacious.

Myself and my friends visited Hampi couple of year back as part of a road trip around Hampi, Badami from Mysore. After much googling and advices from people, we booked this place. It was 5 of us and hence we took a double bedroom.

The place is spartan and clean and quite nice. They have a restaurant in the hotel where had breakfast and it wasn't too bad. Its away from the buzz and tourism of Hampi, yet very close. Its like a 10 minute drive to Vittala temple and the other ruins.

Our stay was pleasant and the price was reasonable.

I would recommend this place to people who are traveling to Hampi and would like to avoid staying in Hampi and not having to travel too far from the ruins.

Dont go expecting like the top class facilities. Its more utilitarian and simple stay.

Overall this place is a very good option for its price – the really upscale places are all some distance away, and most B&Bs close to the ruins are nowhere close to well-equipped. I still prefer to stay in one of the guest houses near the Virupaksha Temple, but we chose the KSTDC hotel this time because we were driving and this place had ample and safe parking. It’s generally clean, it’s probably the only place in Hampi that legally sells beer (and sadly, nothing else), the museum is round the bend and the Royal Enclosure is an easy walk. The highlights are the well laid-out and manicured lawns, ample parking, helpful staff, and the sad part is that most of these government-run tourist lodges have pathetic maintenance. Some of the rooms have been recently refurnished, but even then there’s a lot of stuff that’s falling apart. We had 2 of the renovated rooms between us – the TV didn’t work in one, and the bathroom fittings had a problem in the other; the folks in the room next to ours didn’t have hot water one of the mornings, so the service staff came into our room to get a bucket of hot water! While it’s probably one of those things I’d easily shrug off, it goes to show that the place isn’t entirely professionally managed and maintenance isn’t top notch.

Room Tip: It should work very well for the price if you get one of the remodeled rooms. There’s no specific ad...

We spent a couple of days in this hotel during the 2nd week of December. The booking was done online at karnatakaholidays.net and things were smooth. We were upgraded to delux rooms for free due to demand for the originally booked rooms, which was s a pleasant surprise. The rooms were neat and clean, nice parking space and lawns for kids to play.

On the downside, there was some issue with hot water in the room and the AC was extremely noisy (did not really need since it was winter).

Overall a great experience.

Room Tip: Not too many differences between Deluxe and Semi-Deluxe rooms..
