Ive just returned from three weeks in India and spent six days in this guest house.
The staff were very freindly and accomadating although at times there was a problem with the language barrier.
Rooms were clean and simple with the most beautiful views.I wouldnt have wanted to stay anywhere else.
The food in the cafe was nice, especially the yummy banana cake.
I am quite happy to recommend this guest house and will be returning next year.

we stayed there for a week at September 2009.
the rooms where nice. big with all the needed facilities.
the standards are of lodge and not of an hotel but it was really good and the price fit what we got.
the location is good. Not at the noisy central of Mcleod ( It is at Mcleod , not at drammsala!) but 5 minutes walk from it.

We stayed in the Pema Thang guest house for 5 nights (12.-17.10.2011). The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and blessed with sunshine from 9 o´clock-5 o´clock. We ate breakfast in the restaurant every morning, prompt service and lovely food.
The guy at the reception and his colleagues were always up for a laugh and a joke.
Our only gripe was, we were told the room was only available for 3 nights, the next day we were told, only 2 nights possible, next day all cleared up and 5 days were okay. So, if you are staying there, we suggest you book in advance and confirm your dates. We turned up out of the blue, so we can´t really complain. All in all a most enjoyable experience, we would highly recomment the Guest house, but make sure of confirmation.

We got a spacious room size but very shabby ..
Electric boiler for heating water in the bathroom - in a visible location and wet. There is a risk of electric shock.
Each room has a beautiful balcony overlooking an amazing view. We shared the balcony with a giant hairy ape who walked on it.
Mouse also came to the porch ...
During the morning, after we awoke, we realized we were visited by other animals: apparently, these were bugs that bit us, causing annoying and itchy bites.
Still, we stayed overnight.
After five nights - the guy at reception told us we must leave the room immediately because a group of Americans who would come.
We begged to stay (maybe that has been developed friendships with the monkey, fleas, and mouse) but we were thrown out in the pouring rain ...
We dragged ourselves down the alley rainy and muddy with heavy packs on our backs .... Until we found alternative guest house .. Which was much cheaper, better and humane.
Conclusion: This is an old guest house, filthy, full of nasty animals, unpleasant staff, not worth the expensive cost.

Room Tip: Do not select any room.

We decided upon this place reading the reviews from this website and other travel blogs. We knew that this is a budget hotel, but were still very eager to visit, as we had more or less read good reviews. But our stay there was just terrible.
First of, the staff at the hotel and the restaurant hardly follow either English or Hindi. All of them are Tibetans.
Secondly, the friendly customer service that you may have read about this place is only extended to non-Indians and fellow Tibetans.
They show their displeasure openly if you place the order at the restaurant near the closing time, even if it is 15-20 minutes prior to the scheduled time they take the last order. The restaurant has the most horrendous customer service where the waiters lounge about and are reluctant to get up and come to you even when you call them !!!
The bathroom in our room had very poor drainage and there we had to have baths in ankle-deep water!
Don't expect any room service. If you were to call up the restaurant for something, they would ask you to call up the reception and vice versa.
The food is mediocre. Especially do not order eggs in any form as they are invariably always burnt.
Visit at your own peril !!!

We picked Pema Thang from this website and it turned out to be exactly what we wanted. Away from the milling throng of tourists, but not too far away. A short walk and we were in the midst of it, another short walk and we were away from it all. Perched in our lovely room, right next door to the reception, we could either lie and read in the daylight that flooded in with the clarity and peace of mountain light, or we could sit on the little balcony outside observing the birds and the comings and goings in the Dalai Lama's temple opposite. Far enough to hear nothing but the sound of the bells and occasionally Buddhist chanting, but again, near enough to see the red robed monks walk and bow, or sweep and go about the daily business of life.
The breakfast was fresh, good value for money and varied.
The only drawback, if it can be called that, was that people who are thirsty for tea, as we are, would need to wait till 8 o clock before it is served. A kettle in the room would take away the need to wait (patiently) for the staff to wake up and open the kitchen.
The rooms are spacious and have a kitchen area ( without amenities) although the space can be used, with planning. I would definitely go back there as its a haven of peace and good will.

Room Tip: Ensure you ask for rooms on the top floors. They have views across the valley and of the Dalai Lama...
