Dharamshala - The Sanctuary
Ranked #13 of 79 Hotels in Dharamsala

This is not a large resort but a cozy place. It is away from the main market road & market but very close to nature. We were 2 Couples & we loved the place. The beautiful stream running along the hotel with its small water falls is beautiful & ideal to relax with yr feet in crystal clear water. They arranged a lunch picnic in the mountains which was fantastic.Karan took us in our vehicle for about 6-7 kms up the mountains behind the Resort & we did an easy trekking for 20 mins while he carried all the picnic stuff including food etc & reached a small meadow on the top of a mountain where the view of the Dhauladhar range was awesome & not a soul to disturb you.
The best part of this place is the quiet natural beauty surrounding closeby & you are away from the traffic & crowds of Mcleodgung. The food takes time as it was made to order but was excellent & reasonably priced. The staff is very friendly & they have a very good Holiday activity dept.Again, Karan tied us in knots with his games & puzzles.
Rooms are modern, well maintained though smallish but all have a balcony with a view. Will visit again.

Our trip to Dharamshala didn't start in very good note. We were searching for this resort and calling resort landline nos regularly but it was coming no reply consistently. After roaming around for approx one hour we reached the resort and came to know that one phone was out of order and they were not able to provide satisfactory answer for the other one. We were allotted two rooms on the top floor. Rooms were good facing river and mountains but smaller compared to other Sterling Resorts. There were only two rooms on the top floor so felt deserted.

The good part about resort was the restaurant staff and the activity manager. Activity manager tried everything to manage Paragliding, making kids to play, arranging evening gatherings and always ready to help. Restaurant staff was also very helpful and listened to all the needs we had . Though we missed the Buffet as according to resort management it was not possible because of less occupancy. But overall the food quality was good.
The infrastructure is average but the location is good. It is right on the banks of river and offers views of Dhauladhar range. It is approx 5-6 kms away from city and has a good approach road in case you know it. We stayed there for two nights and it is good enough for Dharamshala sight seeing as there is not much to do. After half day sight seeing , we mostly spent time in activities which we thoroughly enjoyed. Overall the holidaying experience here was average.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor are the best in the resort

The property is a little distant about 4-5 km from the city. Can be considered to be plus point if you want to enjoy the nature. Though it is not a big property but the peaceful surroundings and river on the backside adds to the beauty. Approach road is very good. People are there to help you including the hotel’s reception desk.
Previously the hotel was known as “Hotel 360 Degree”. Now the property has been taken over by Sterling and they are refurnishing it. Staff at reception is very friendly and helpful. You get a warm welcome.
Rooms are quite spacious for two persons. They provide you with a kettle with tea and coffee packs in the room. The attached Bathroom has modern gadgets like 24 hrs hot water, shower etc.
Hotel has arrangement for your driver’s stay in a dormitory with meals at nominal charges.
.
Restaurant is well managed with good decor. One door opens directly on the road outside. I saw some locals also patronizing it. Though the menu is not very large but they serve with a smile. The Chef makes every effort to make your meals palatable and customize it to your liking. My thanks to you Mr. Verma for serving us with a delicious sizzler.
I fully enjoyed my stay there.
My thanks to Ms.Shivani, Mr.Himanshu and Mr.Ritesh for making our stay so comfortable and unforgettable.
Thanks to Mr.Anurag, the Manager of The Sanctuary. He has a friendly nature, is approachable and caring as a host.
I can recommend this place for a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: i feel that rooms on the backside are better. i stayed in one ,on 1st Floor. the balcony opens towar...

The Sanctuary is very good value for money. We had booked it at INR 1500/night (incl. breakfast) for 4N/5D. The resort is about 4-5 Km from Dharamshala market and you need a vehicle to roam around. Secure parking is available.
Highlights - Rooms are great at the price offered. North Indian food is awesome. Staff is very helpful and friendly.
Scope for Improvement - Ventilation in washrooms (the only disappointment during our stay). Introduction of toiletries in the washroom. More variety in desserts and "Halal" non-veg food. South Indian food needs a lot of improvement

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the "stream".

I booked the Sanctuary as I was visiting Dharamsala for a few nights to watch the India v England cricket match. The town of Dharamsala is quite spread out, and this place is around 4km from the main part of town and very peaceful.

I arrived fairly late on the Saturday night after a 200km drive from Amritsar, even though it was dark I could see the outlines of the Himalayas and get a sense of the amazing views. Check-in was very fast as I was so late, and the hotel were able to arrange staff quarters for my driver to save him the long drive back.

The 360 restaurant which is part of the hotel was open until 10.30pm so I had a nice dinner before settling in to my room. The restayrant seemed quite popular with a few non-residents also eating there.

My room itself was a good size and nicely decorated and very clean. If you haven't been to the area before you might not understand how cold it gets at night, but the heater in the room certainly worked overtime taking off the chill. A flat screen tv is provided with a good selection of cable channels, I managed to catch a live FA Cup football match before bed!

The bathroom is also a good size, with a shower and basin. One thing to note is that most of the hotels up in the hills switch off the hot water late at night, so don't leave your shower until late or you'll have to have a cold one!!

Waking up in the morning I walked out onto my balcony and was amazed at the brilliant views of the Himalayas, the impression from the previous night certainly wasn't misleading. I had a quick snack of the buffet breakfast before heading out for the day to watch the match.

The reception staff were very helpful during my stay, offering plenty of advice on pretty much anything I could throw at them. Also acted as a translator between me and my driver as his English was as bad as my Hindi!

I'd certainly return here when I next get the chance to visit this area, a very relaxing location with great staff.
