Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge
Reviewed February 26, 2014

I was introduced to this safari lodge by a friend since there are not so many luxury lodges in the Ruhija area and I got a good deal from the safari lodge manager, and this was affordable for three of us including our tour leader. The books were well handled by Moses, and all emails were replied in time.

We reached at 4pm after enduring the hard battle road in our Land Rover but when we reached the area, all the fatigue of the road was long forgotten as we were warmly welcomed. Rested a bit in the lounge and were shown to our Deluxe rooms which over look Bwindi impenetrable forest at a height of 2400meters above sea level. I must say I got more that I expected...thanks to all of you guys at Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge.

The food is great...four courses of very nice meals, yes the chef is good definitely.

The bedding linen is soft and mattresses were soft and comfortable for one going gorilla trekking the next day. There is a fireplace in the dining area where you can chill and relax as you take in a glass of wine or bottle of beer, or whatever you choose from their huge selection of drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).

We woke up for our breakfast...the orders are taken with precision even if at one point they forgot my grilled tomato...but were quick to bring it. The staff pay attention to detail and are well trained, polite and knowledgeable about the place. They even offered to take us for a walk around the villages for free, something many lodges here emphasize to be paid for first.

The packed lunch was great, with the grilled chicken, sandwiches, banana, fruit juice and eggs. What more would one want for a packed lunch...:-)

We enjoyed our stay here for two nights in February 2014 and will definitely be back sometime soon.

My wife and I spent there a night prior Gorilla trecking in mid September. Overall it's a great place with very friendly staff.
Advantages:
- great view, just amazing, above clounds straight across rainforest
- excellent food, beautifull lodge interior
- friendly staff as well as manager, great supportive service
- very close to the safari starting place (no need for long travel prior trekking)
- manager very helpfull regarding not only gorilla trekking but also overall trip advice, suggestions etc. there was an issue with Visa payment, he trusted us that we will wire transfer from other location, very surprising
- is just outside village where you can get nice handmade souvenirs (I admit it can be busy there but it's a tourist place afterall and they work for a living)

disadvantages:
- very expensive, even in comparison to close competition, pricing in travel books extremelly outdated. We decided not to go for one of the regular houses for quests so we stayed in a rooms that suspiciously looked like a former staff rooms. Hot water was boiled outside in a huge container with a wood :) :) for the price of 200$ for couple you may get disapointed

to sum up if you have lot's of $ to spend you will be extremelly satisfied. I recommend going there early for the view

Room Tip: These "budget" rooms look really like budget but are not cheap :) there is only small room...

Great location to view the mountains in the mist...lovely individual cottages...but the food wasn't great,it was ok. Hardly any electric! And they didn't offer a candle or a torch! Because we needed to get up & leave early,it was really inconvenient to be trying to get ready in the dark, early morning! After requesting a candle, they gave me two,but nothing to put them in,at which point I improvised with 2 soda water bottles! There was very little hot water,& the shower didn't work, though all the fittings looked recent,so it was a case of crouching under the mixer tap where the water seemed warmer,& "showering" that way! We only were provided one towel each for two days,& the cottages were cold, which meant the next time you had a " shower",we had to dry off with cold, damp towels....it was only because we were in a superior room that we had a log fire, otherwise it was cold accommodation.....but the views were amazing, & the staff were very helpful, however,it has along to to go to improve....they had no tonic water, ever, said they can't get it?!?! Wish I,d packed some! Once again, this was part of a package we booked & paid for with Let's Go Travel......

Room Tip: Go for a superior room....uninterrupted scenery,& their own log fires, double balcony.......well...

Dear Reviewer,

Ruhija Gorilla Lodge management welcomes the efforts you took to make observations at the lodge while we hosted you. I figure out we tried our best to make you feel at home with us however we came short in some areas .
We take this with deep concern to constantly improve due to your positive criticism and your comments drive us to improve the facility.

Very kind regards

If you want a true Gorillas in the Mist experience this is the place to go. 2,400 feet up in the mountains you are above the clouds for a lot of the time, got a bit cool in the evening and overnight but the open fire, that the staff made up on request, certainly made the room warm and cosy. The view was outstanding. Power is supplied by generator and on restricted hours but if you want the eco experience that just adds to the charm. Water pressure could do with a bit of attention, it took ages for the hot to come through, the pressure at the tap was good but put it onto the shower and it struggled. Food and service were excellent and as someone else has reported they had the best pillows that we have ever come across really should have asked where they got them from. From the lodge it was only 10 minutes to the starting point for our Gorilla trek and the highlight of our tour of Uganda standing on the side of a mountain, in a very aptly named impenetrable forest surrounded by 14 gorillas. Wow.

My children, mother, and myself were awestruck as we arrived at Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge. The view of the endless mountain range was incredible and we were greeted by a very friendly staff, three of whom were named Moses. Our rooms were very clean and comfortable with cozy beds, extra blankets in case of cold evenings, a fireplace, and a porch bathed in afternoon sunlight overlooking Bwindi Impenetratable Forest. We dined in the main lodge where we were given a choice of two different meals and a choice of what time we'd like to eat. The food was quite good. The lodge is located within a short walk to the village which I found quite convenient. Moses the manager was very accomodating and made sure that our comfort was his main concern. I would definately stay here again! As would the rest of my family!

If you're looking for friendly, helpful people, great beds - with the best pillows we found in all of East Africa - and lovely views, Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge is your place. We stayed for 2 nights in a superior room, with a fireplace, in August of 2013. Our favorite part was Moses - Moses the manager, as there are 3 Moses' at the lodge. Moses is smart, funny, and a problem solver. When our trip to the lodge took longer than expected, Moses called to check on our progress along the way. When the shoes of my friend were considered unacceptable for trekking, Moses found her a pair that would work within 10 minutes, so we wouldn't be late. The rooms were also great - very clean, comfortable, and quiet. We appreciated having an Airtel internet modem so we could immediately send pictures home. The food was fine - not amazing, but not bad. And when we made requests, like bacon for breakfast, bacon showed up in mass quantities, and was perfect. I'd definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: The superior rooms are a little larger and have fireplaces. But all of the rooms have spectacular vi...
