Having been warned by friends and relatives about the dangers of visiting Johannesburg staying at this place made the trip worthwhile. From the ever-smiling front desk staff and the cleaning team.Superb! We stayed in a 6 person dorm for a week and boy what an experience! At R90 per night for a bed things couldnt be easier.Their large swimming pool is a refreshing plus and the mix of traveller's made everything unique.Being at the heart of central Gauteng the place 's location gives easy access to any place be it the airport the great Monte Casino.Oh for food we went to both the Bright water Commons ?(thats the name i think) and the upmarket Rosebank Mall)

I stayed there this weekend and had an overall good experience. There is a bit of confusion depending on if you think you are staying at the Sleek Backpackers or Accoustix, they are one in the same place, however the outside of the hostel makes no mention of Accoustix, so be forwarned. The staff at the front desk are super nice and extremely helpful, even if they don't know the answer to your questions they will go the distance to help you out! I stayed in a 6 person mixed dorm, it was very basic, but comfortable enough, only thing was the first night the ticking from the electric panel in the room was a bit annoying, but got used to it. Bring a lock if you want to use the locker in the room. There is a DIY breakfast of toast, coffee, and tea. If you want snacks, there is an Engen petrol station across the street, otherwise, it's quite a mission to get any other type of food, could always use Mr. Delivery! There are several TVs and a computer for internet usage. The toilets were ok, a bit dirty. The showers are not for those shy about their bodies. Basically for the men, there are three showers but its completely open between them, kind of like at a gym. For the women, there are glass separators between the three showers, but they are see-through. When it gets steamy, they are less see through, bring a bathing costume if you aren't sure about showering for all to see. (Granted it was generally one person showering at a time when I was there, so maybe it's never a problem.) The pool was massive and really clean, though it is now winter, so I did not venture into it. To get into the city I walked about 15 minutes to the Randburg Taxi Rank and caught a taxi (minibus) to the Bree Street Rank in Johannesburg. Overall it was a good place to stay.

As a last minute booking for a particularly busy pre Xmas shopping week in Joburg I was pleased to get a room and pleased with the efficient and quick service I received by email. I booked a single room for 5 nights. I was met on time at the airport and taken to the hostel, I had business to attend to in Pretoria and did not really check my room until I arrived back that evening. My 'room' in fact turned out to be a very small garden shed by the pool. It was slightly larger than a coffin with a small very uncomfortable metal bed and nothing else. The door was a stable door that required you to padlock yourself inside to sleep and in view of the untreated wood could easily in fact have become a coffin. In view of the late hour I decided to try and stay for one night and find somewhere else in the morning. There was no food available on the premises and although the area was described as safe, it didnt look particulary so to me and the shops were quite a distance from the hostel. I opted for the petrol station across the road. I duly padlocked my self into the shed and attempted to sleep. On their website they advertise 6 DSTV areas, well they were certainly all on and all on different channels, although there were very few people staying there there seemed to be an abundance of staff, watching the 6 TVs, playing pool and bizzarely playing the piano for hours on end. So not a place where I could reccomend a good nights sleep. To top it all after spending half an hour in the bed I was bitten several times by what apperared to be fleas. I was up and dressed within minutes and checking out. I was not asked what the problem was, was charged for the night in full and even requested to pay a cancellation fee for the further 4 nights which I refused. I would certainly not reccomend this hostel to anyone

The place is under new managment and has been rebuilt, the wood Log Cabins that are described in the Review does not exist anymore, and has been replaced by a modern brick structure with bathrooms now on siute, we still do have entertainment on offer but we have biult entertainment Rooms that are sound proof, these are used to facilitate the piano playing, this only happeneds plus/minusonce a week.
Another 10 bathrooms have been created,
The rooms are great, the customers love the place.
Sorry for your bad exp.
Kind Regards

Nomsa
