“Save the airfare to Munich!”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Right in the heart of Johannesburg (Randburg) you will find one the best authentic German restaurants serving outside of that country!

Excellent schnitzels, sausage and absolutely huge scrumptious eisbeins that are challenge to the hungriest of diners. (Their meals are GENEROUS and they must go through a lot of "doggy bags!)

Their is a full range of German beers to wash everything down and the atmosphere is very authentic,

This is now one of our favourites and a definite "go back to"

“Scwabinger past its best”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Over a long period we dined here from time to time, however on our last visit we feel that this restaurant is long overdue for a drastic upgrade. The general decor is shabby and very dated. Service was slow and the menu has been unchanged and is quite unimaginative.

“An old classic...or just old?”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

As a first timer it is unclear where to go once you have "crossed the threshold" as the layout is confusing and the stale cigarette smoke in one section is decidedly off-putting to say the least. Some area's are a little tired and tatty - although some would say full of character.
So after the initial not-so-lekker impression I was greeted by very friendly and helpful staff and we had a WONDERFUL waitress (Mona Lisa).
We ordered the Eisbein and the Chicken Schnitzel which were nicely complemented by the impressive selection of German draft beers. I can highly recommend the Bromhof which is not too heavy and quite fruity.
The food was good (althought the Eisbein would've been nicer with a tasty gravy) and the portions are very generous.
The Apfel Strudel looked divine and by all accounts was delicious.

“Good authentic German food!”
Reviewed July 13, 2013

Schwabing had grown an considerable amount over the years but it still remains as the only decent German restaurant in Jo'burg. For the real authentic food and German ambience go downstairs in the original small restaurant, not on the wooden decks outside which serve Pizza. My favourite is always a good old Schnitzel and an apple tart for dessert!

“Good choice”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

The Schwabinger Stuben offers a good variety of German dishes and imported beers. There are numerous locations within the greater restaurant complex that offer a variety of seating / dining options. The food is possibly not the BEST German food I have eaten, but is certainly acceptable. A lot of it is clearly 'bought in' rather than made on the premises, but the overall quality and quantity is acceptable. There is a good choice on the menu.
The beer selection is quite extensive, and should satisfy anyone wanting a real German beer experience.
Parking is secure and ample.
My only complaint is that Schwabinger Stuben appears to be a bit of a student hangout, so be prepared for some irritating youthful exuberance. This can add atmosphere, or be plain irritating - you decide!
Overall, I would certainly go back.
