African Pride Mount Grace Country House & Spa

We booked into Mount Grace for our anniversary weekend and enjoyed every minute of it!
The positives:
The staff were very gracious and friendly from the moment we checked in, all going out of their way to make our stay comfortable. There was a slight problem with being allocated a booked room when we checked in but it was promptly rectified and we received a complimentary fruit platter from the management team with an apology for the inconvenience. A special thank you Patience, Patricia, Muzi and the rest of the awesome staff at Mount Grace.

Although the establishment is large and fully booked, it is spaced out and as such you do not see many guests which adds to the tranquility of the place. Besides the availability of spa for bookings, guests have access to two pools in the main hotel area, one of which is heated.
The spa area also contains a heated pool, steam pool and jacuzzi, all of which are free to use and open until 8pm so make sure you take your bathers! There is also a gym which opens at 6am :)
The breakfast on offer was delicious and we were even spoilt with fresh waffles!

The negatives:
The bed was quite uncomfortable being two joined beds. One end of the bed was slanted which was annoying. (Room 124).
The spa prices are very expensive compared to many other 5* spas that I have been to.
The dinner prices are also expensive and not at all value for money.

In years gone by the Sunday lunches at Mount grace were legendary with sumptuous food and a wide variety not usually found on a buffet.
Alas it seems those days are gone forever. The beautiful surrounds are still there as are the premium prices, but the food and service no longer exist.

The food fare is of very low grade with no care or pride taken in their offering. Today they offer a very basic buffet with plain food that looks like it was congealed. The flies on the meat which went unnoticed by the serving staff didn't do much for my appetite. The starters are extremely basic and look and taste like they've come out of a can. The desserts are extremely sweet to the point where they are inedible.
I wouldn't pay R 60 for this quality of buffet never mind the R 200 odd they charge.
The service was slow but bearable with mistakes that point to lack of training or a lack of care for the organisation they work for. The well polished service machine of years gone by seems well and truly rusted.

The hotel has a general feel of being past its sell by date with obvious signs of decay which didn't exist a few years ago. It seems to me that their focus has shifted to groups and conferences with a preference fo quantity over quality.
The staff were courteous but not as attentive as they used to be.

For me, it's lost its charm. It's no longer the magical cozy place it used to be. In this day and age when we have so many choices there's no longer any compelling reason to visit.

What a great experience!

The facility is immaculate. Staff and management bent over backwards for us

We keep strictly kosher and brought our own food and wine. Solly reassured us that they have many Kosher and Halaal clients. He knew exactly  how to manage our food. He made sure our food was double wrapped before going into the oven to be heated. Clearly they know what they doing which was a pleasant surprise. The waiters were friendly and attentive.

The environment is super relaxing and the Staff at the spa made us feel so welcome. Its seems that it truly was their pleasure to accommodate us. The heated pools are great specially the flotation pool.

This had definitely set a precedent for our future anniversaries.

I'd deduct half a point as the bedside lamps and the Aircon weren't working.

We had a delightful two night stay with my wife. The resort boasts walking trails in the Magaliesburg countryside with grand views of the surrounding hills. We stayed in a luxury room with a small pool next to the spa. The room was reasonably well appointed and had a nice combination of local touches.

We used the spa including the salt pool which I recommend to everyone. The couples massage was good. The resort has two restaurants – one buffet and the other À la carte. The À la carte restaurant is fine – the menu is rather bland with all the usual choices you would expect from a large hotel –think ‘meat and two sticks’. The buffet are expansive and well presented. We enjoyed breakfast and lunch the selections can be overwhelming.

It is probably best to bring your own refreshments to enjoy during the day and evening. Sundowners poolside are enjoyable. The room had a small bar fridge to keep drinks on tap and cool. Room service or any service, for that matter, can take forever – it seems the distances from the kitchen and the number of units across the resort are a real challenge to service promptly. They just aren’t staffed up to service the units correctly. We ordered room service one night which arrived cold, half complete (forgot the sauces) and of questionable quality. Best just to give room service a pass – eat in the restaurants and retire to your room with a bottle of wine you brought yourself.

The hotel can feel like a bit of a conferencing mill – we arrived just as a large group was leaving. But from the views of our unit we didn’t notice it. While is hotel is part of a small independent chain of hotels in South Africa – it could use the systems and service of an excellent global chain like Four Seasons to bring it up to a consistent standard. That, if anything, is the knock against the hotel – it has all the right infrastructure for an excellent stay but its service is inconsistent.

Overall
Food quality was 3 / 5
Service was 3/5
Rooms are 4/5
Spa 4/5

For two nights we spent about 6,000 Rand or 300 USD per night

Room Tip: Select a unit with a pool and a high view. The standard rooms are not worth it.

Myself and my wife have just had a most dissapointing evening at The Mount Grace hotel . The setting is beautiful , the facilities are are wonderful and being so close to the Suburbs of Johannesburg is such a bonus but the service is not good and the food poor.

The waitering staff are plain incompetent and whilst there is no rush for a drink or a snack there is no reason we should wait the length of time we did between getting drinks or food. The waiters need training . They got orders wrong , forgot ice , forget to return . Try ordering tea for two and waiting 15 minutes and a pot arrives for three with ONE tea bag in tepid water .

We unfortunately did not book the award winning Rambling Vine restaurant and had to eat an evening meal in The Twist buffet. This is more of a canteen than a fine dining buffet. Dried meat;both the pork and the beef, soggy, cold dumplings, vegetables dried and cold . Quite honestly unedible . We filled up with cheese - a choice of two cheeses on the platter ! Whilst a buffet does not require many waiters ,ordering a bottle of wine with ice was painful with the ice forgotten again.

Even leaving is difficult . The golf buggies that take you to and fro from the rooms and to the car park just don't arrive . Phoning reception on the third time to hear the buggies "are on the way" does not suffice . One has to be very forceful to get a lift and room service need to understand the difference between 'five minutes' and 'thirty five minutes'

The hotel may have won awards in the past and may have had a great reputation but on current form there will be few future awards and certainly not a place we would visit or recommend to anyone .

I was at Mount Grace yesterday and had a similar experience to Derek Nair in the previous review.
On arrival at the reception - both ladies ignored me whilst they sat on the phones. I was requested to wait for a golf cart to take me to my meetings venue - this took 10 minutes when I could very easily have walked! When I arrived for lunch the buffet selections were depleted and the staff made no effort to replenish them despite our requests. Drinks orders were mixed up and some never arrived. The tea service at our conference venue was dismal. As the person responsible for marketing destination Gauteng this is extremely disappointing as Mount Grace has always been one of our star attractions! Come on management - lets fix it - you have an amazing product don't it slip any further.
