“Peaceful setting, professional service, indifferent food”

Van Gaalen Kaasmakerij
Attraction details
Reviewed April 23, 2018

We spent a pleasant couple of hours today at Van Gaalen's sitting under the trees. Being a week day it was very peaceful and not very busy. Unfortunately, even with a rather limited menu on offer, the food was indifferent to say the least. We both had hamburgers - the rolls were extremely stale, and there was barely a taste of cheese on them. The potato wedges looked delicious, but were under-cooked and not very pleasant. We were not tempted to stop in at the cheese shop to buy cheese, which probably says it all.

Another forgettable meal.

This is a beautiful setting for a Cheese factory.. Very nice. Stunning little shop in which to endulge in the lovely variety of Dutch Cheeses.

We took a Sunday drive on the Magaliesberg Meander and stopped to experience their cheese which they are renowned for. Their cheeses are par for the course, some spicy and some bland. They offer take away purchases with other home made items for sale. there is a garden setting which is pleasant.

What an amazing spot go stop and recharge! With its quaint shop, lovely cheese platters, chilled bubbly and stunning surroundings, Van Gaalen is a must-see for anyone in the area. Mathias is one if the friendliest servers I have ever had and the food was great. Can't wait to try a picnic next to the river!

It’s a lovely Sunday morning drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria, then you are out in the bush under the towering Magaliesberg. Service is good, choice limited but includes good salads and a cheesy burger, then a meander through the creamery displays a string Dutch influence from salty licorice to special cookies. Great Birding around the fame but it lost a star for keeping magnificent Blue Cranes in a cage, albeit a large one.
