“Overrated cheese farm”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

We went to the Van Gaalen farm on a Saturday morning, expecting a great family outing. We got there 2 minutes after the cheese making tour started and was rudely shown away by a staff member. We then went to another staff member, asking if we cannot join the tour, we did not mind missing the first 2 minutes of the tour. The tour was very dissapointing and definately overprised. It was supposed to include a 'cheese tasting' which ended up being two bits of cheese per person, not even bite-size. The tour price also included some kind of tart and a drink. The tart was so dry no one in the family could swallow it down with the cheap diluted cooldrink provided. The setting is also not nice, there are plastics and other rubbish where the goats stay and a smelly little dam. Definately not where I would want to have a picnic or a family outing again.

“Cheese tasting experience”
Reviewed July 25, 2011

We decided to do a tour of the cheese farm so headed off early on Saturday morning. We arrived to a tranquil setting, with the mist slowly lifting.

The tour / info session was very informative with our guide explaining the history of Dutch cheese and what the links are between the cheese farm and their heritage. Although the manufacturing facility seems very small when looking at it, you soon realize that quality cheeses are being matured here. The cheeses sampled allowed us to experience various flavours which came in handy when making our purchases later.

“For the loooooong weekend lunch in a romantic setting”
Reviewed July 17, 2010

Hidden beneath the Magalisberg mountain range I came across this small cheese farm by sheer luck, and I've been back regularly.

You would think this place must have been around for generations, but according to their website, Ms Van Gaalen immigrated from the Netherlands only in 1990 and started this cheese farm a few years later. In a small shop you can buy the cheese freshly cut from the wheel, and you can also get lots of dutch delicacies.

The cheese made on site (during the week you can watch the cheesemakers live at work) ranges from Gouda to Burenkaas, with a variety of herb flavors, and my favorite goats cheese gouda.

In a restaurant in the same building, with a large terrace and garden area, which serves a variety of "cheesy" dishes, from cold platters to dutch "kroketten", and the meal is only complete with a generous serving of cheese cake.

You can order picnic baskets one day in advance and picnic in the large garden. With a bottle of bubbly or a chilled Chardonnay this is the best receipe for a loooooong romantic weekend lunch!
