“Mvuu camp”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

Wonderful palce to stay in Liwonde NP, elephants, hippos, warthogs, monkeys and all sort of birds welcome you at the camp site and visit you at night.
The staff is very helpful and friendd and the knowledge of the guides is very high and remarquable.
The toilets are clean and confortable, the pool is very nice and the bar too.
The boat safari proposed by the camp is simply wonderful, the walking safari and the night game drive as well.
Shortly, Liwonde NP has everything to be a great game reserve.

We camped rather than staying in a lodge so this review relates only to the campsite and facilities. The sandy camp site was spacious and comfortable with good facilities, hot showers, good ablution block, swimming pool and a nice bar. It was possible to walk by the river and see wildlife quite easily. We did game drives, bush walks and the Shire River cruise and the guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Overall this was an excellent experience and one I would repeat.

Spent 5 nights at the lodge. The setting, great service, friendly staff, mountains of food, comfortable rooms and unbelievable boat safaris / afternoon game drives / morning walks from a personal guide. We were completely blown away.

We spent four days at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde National Park and I could write a book about them... from the welcome at the jetty to leaving 4 amazing days later you couldn't fault anything. If I had to pick the worst thing it's that the towels & bedding were changed more often than necessary. From an environmental point of view it matters but it certainly took nothing away from our stay.
The "tent" was big, canvas on a wooden platform with thatch, a sitting area, huge comfy bed, double-basins and two showers - inside if you wanted to avoid the sun, or outside if you just couldn't get enough of being in the bush. Everything was arranged with so much attention to detail, just perfect.
The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful and could not do enough for you.
Food was delicious, the coffee made just how we like it, sitting by the fire after dinner enjoying the sounds of the night and the starry sky.
But most importantly the wildlife was wonderful, whether we went on boat, driving or walking safari. Our guide was very knowledgeable and went the extra mile to ensure we saw everything we wanted to, and nature was very generous to us.
I would also recommend the rhino tracking, they're doing a very worthwhile thing there for rhino conservation and if you're as lucky as we were you can come away saying you've been chased by three rhinos and live to tell the tale :-)
If you're in Malawi and want to experience wildlife you've got to go to Liwonde National Park and treat yourself to a stay at the lodge if you can.

Room Tip: I think our "tent" was number 6. Bit of a walk from the main area but I loved it like that...

We got on the boat with our guide (Duncan) and he said "what would you like to see this afternoon?" I thought for a minute and said "Kingfishers" so he found us five different species inside an hour. Lots of hippos and crocks too. After a while we had a drink and watched the sun go down and then chugged home to change for dinner. That was our first afternoon and we spent the rest of our stay alternating between walking tours, jeep rides and another trip out on the river. The rooms were very good, the food not bad and the staff were all friendly and on the ball.

Spent two nights at this wonderfull camp. We were picked up from the jetty by our guide Angel -and right upon arrival at the camp, we were well informed about the do's and don't s during our stay. Every single one of the staff was very friendly and very welcoming. Our tent was a real oldfashioned safaritent -just the way we like it, with bathroom in the back and a little area in front where we could sit and watch the river -or the monkeys and the warthogs who played and grazed on the lawn. Angel was a great guide and driver on the drives and the boat safaris. Very knowledgable about the birds and animals. And though everybody were doing their best to make us feel at home -our waiter Maxwell is worth mentioning for always making us laugh and bringing a good mood to the table. If people stay for more than one night, I'd recommend doing one gamedrive in the Rhino Sanctuary -as it is a completely different experiance than the rest of Liwonde National Park!

We chose to go to the lodges in the Camp rather than the more luxurious lodges at the Mvuu Lodge. These were excellent, well furnished and well looked after. The food was good and the children were so tired they were willing to go to bed as early as we needed to go. All that safariing makes you very tired. We had two lodges one for our son and his family and one for just us the two grandparents. Ours (no. 5) had a wonderful lakeside view.
The hippos come right up to the camp at night and they are very noisy.
We saw lots of different animals - hippos, elephants, crocodiles, various deer, lovely birds etc. I really reccommend the river safari. The night safari was disappointing because we didn't see very many animals that we hadn't seen in the day but just our bad luck. The guides are excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a lodge facing the water.
