“Plenty to see here.”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

We got on the boat with our guide (Duncan) and he said "what would you like to see this afternoon?" I thought for a minute and said "Kingfishers" so he found us five different species inside an hour. Lots of hippos and crocks too. After a while we had a drink and watched the sun go down and then chugged home to change for dinner. That was our first afternoon and we spent the rest of our stay alternating between walking tours, jeep rides and another trip out on the river. The rooms were very good, the food not bad and the staff were all friendly and on the ball.

Spent two nights at this wonderfull camp. We were picked up from the jetty by our guide Angel -and right upon arrival at the camp, we were well informed about the do's and don't s during our stay. Every single one of the staff was very friendly and very welcoming. Our tent was a real oldfashioned safaritent -just the way we like it, with bathroom in the back and a little area in front where we could sit and watch the river -or the monkeys and the warthogs who played and grazed on the lawn. Angel was a great guide and driver on the drives and the boat safaris. Very knowledgable about the birds and animals. And though everybody were doing their best to make us feel at home -our waiter Maxwell is worth mentioning for always making us laugh and bringing a good mood to the table. If people stay for more than one night, I'd recommend doing one gamedrive in the Rhino Sanctuary -as it is a completely different experiance than the rest of Liwonde National Park!

We chose to go to the lodges in the Camp rather than the more luxurious lodges at the Mvuu Lodge. These were excellent, well furnished and well looked after. The food was good and the children were so tired they were willing to go to bed as early as we needed to go. All that safariing makes you very tired. We had two lodges one for our son and his family and one for just us the two grandparents. Ours (no. 5) had a wonderful lakeside view.
The hippos come right up to the camp at night and they are very noisy.
We saw lots of different animals - hippos, elephants, crocodiles, various deer, lovely birds etc. I really reccommend the river safari. The night safari was disappointing because we didn't see very many animals that we hadn't seen in the day but just our bad luck. The guides are excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a lodge facing the water.

We chose to camp at Mvuu Wilderness Camp, rather than the lodge, so this review relates only to the camp.
Good facilities for campers, including pool, hot water, a kitchen area and lanterns next to the tent at night. We opted to take our meals in the restaurant area: no complaints about quality or quantity and it was nice that, having mentioned I was vegetarian when booking our first meal, this was noted at every subsequent meal time without me needing to remind anyone. The set meal was on the expensive side for Malawi: $25 per person, but the location of the Camp means that supplies are making a bit of a journey to get there! Coffee/ tea and cake during the afternoon was a welcome touch. Excellent staff: knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. We stayed for four nights: it's definitely worth staying for a few days in order to get a real sense of the place.

We loved our outings with guide Richard Chamwala on the Shire River. We saw so many birds, drifting in for close-ups of Pied and LMalachite Kigfishers, Open-billed Storks, and Snake Eagles. The sunsets were awesome, with large flocks of Ibis and Cormorants passing overhead to their roost trees. Crocodiles lined the shore and elephants and waterbuck came to the river's edge to graze. But most amazing was having two large male hippos burst out of the water in a fight over territory, mouths agage and lunging at each other. Richard kept us at a safe distance but it was still intense.

The camp was wonderful and intimate, with just 8 tented chalets. The food was totally divine.

Definitely the best place to go in Malawi....nice people and amazing animals and trips out. Pay the moeny and stay for a few days - dry season the best time with elephants hippos crocs and lots of other big animals to see close up by boat or land rover. Birding is good and guides are excellent. The rooms are great with huge beds and good netting. Watch out for the monkeys in the outside loo at the restaurant!

I booked this in April 2011 in a 'wet season special' for $220 and it was my best ever Hotel or Safari lodge stay! The food was excellent and served either outside by the water or in the dining area overlooking the Shire.

My 'room' or 'lodge' overlooked an inlet and felt very much 'in the action' at night, hearing the birds fly past, hippos in the river, and possibly a lion in the background.

The Safari tours were top-notch and the drivers and guides were very experienced. I would love to go back one day in the dry season and enjoy the hotel and safari facilities all over again.

The early morning walk is worth it, if you can get up before sun rise (e.g. before 5am!)
