If you are thinking about trekking Mount Kenya I would recommend Mohakin Climbers (www.mohakinclimbers.com). My father (56 years) and I (26 years) trekked to Point Lenana in August 2010 with Mohakin Climbers, ascending via the Sirimon Route and descending via the Chorgoria Route. The company is based in Nanyuki. It is run by a local, Mohammed Muthiri, who was recommended to me by a friend. Compared to prices quoted by tour operators based in Nairobi, Mohakin Climbers is very good value for money for both residents and non-residents.
Mohammed and his team were excellent: friendly, helpful and professional. Mohammed met us the evening before the trek to explain what would happen on of each day of the trek: how far we would climb, where we would stay etc. He introduced as to our guide and two porters. He checked we had all the equipment we needed and lent my father a head torch (essential for the fourth day, when we set off at 3am in the dark to reach Point Lenana). He even accompanied us on the first day of the trek to check that everything was okay.
Captain Joe, the cook, fed us extremely well given the fact that everything he used to make the meals (ingredients and equipment) had to be carried up the mountain on his back. Every meal had three courses. Other trekkers were envious of our generous spreads.
Sam, the guide, was patient and encouraging. He pointed out various flora and fauna and features of the landscapes and answered our questions with a good-natured smile. Douglas, one of the porters, acted as an assistant guide. This meant that on the day of our trek to the peak my father and I each had a person to look after us. They allowed us to go at our own pace, and encouraged us to keep going when we felt disheartened. Douglas even carried my father’s day sack the last stretch of the climb to help him to reach the top.
The team were flexible, changing the arrangements of the last day to reduce the distance we had to walk when we were worn out after the climb to the summit. They tried to do everything within their power to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for us.
The trek was exhausting and physically challenging – both my father and I suffered from altitude sickness – but it was very rewarding. The scenery on the Chogoria route was especially spectacular.
I would happily book another trek with Mohakin Climbers in the future.
