“Thin walls!”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

I was there the week after Easter. As people have stated, the lodge is quiet, relaxing and peaceful. All of the employees are wondeful and the food was great. However, the structure is made of wood and noise goes straight through the walls. We were there during a slow week and they should have place guest with empty rooms in between. One of our fellow guests had a room next to a quest that snored all night and kept them up!

Stayed at the Serena Mountain Lodge with my wife over Easter holiday for our 12th anniversary. The lodge is quiet, relaxing and very peaceful. Great balcony to view animal from the watering point. Most of the rooms overlook the watering point. Easy access from the main road to Nanyuki with tarmac all the way to the hotel. Since its an all wooden structure, it gets noisy at night from the floors on top which can get a bit irritating. bathrooms also a bit squeezed. The staff are very friendly and great service. Good breakfast and diner although could do with more variety. Champaign during breakfast most exciting. Would definitely go back.

I just loved this place. Yes we were there at the start of rainy/low season and the animals were somewhat disbursed. I don't care. It was a joy to relax with coffee and whispers over the watering hole in the cool air. After almost 3 weeks bouncing around in a nice Land Cruiser over hot dusty pothole rutted roads, sitting oh so civilized and letting the animals come to us was a pleasure. Our room had a balcony facing the watering hole with cushioned seating under an overhang so light rain was not an issue. We also joined other visitors for delightful conversation and tea on the main balcony lounge both in the day and evening. The staff naturalist greeted us at dinner to list what animals we particularly wished to see if they showed up at night. Staff knocked on our door through the wee hours to alert us for which we were grateful. So civilized. The rooms were immaculate and comfortable. The dining room gave great service and fresh offerings. We had champagne at breakfast for a jolly start to the day. The naturalist lead a beautiful private walk and talk around the grounds and along a trail. I adored everything here.

Room Tip: Get a balcony room facing the watering hole.

I like this lodge and have stayed several times, over the years. One night is enough, as basically other than a short nature walk, you are confined to the lodge. Seeing animals is very hit and miss and we have had very good and equally, very poor nights here. Most recently, we only saw a handful of animals and some of those were fed by the lodge. The food is fine and the lodge is all wood, so do not expect large and quiet spacing between rooms. Nevertheless, unless you are very unlucky you will not overhear your neighbours too much...it might not be suitable for a honeymoon, however! If you are lucky with sightings, the hide is really good and get's you nice and close. The Ranger will use an optional(you identify before you go to bed, what you want to be woken up for)
alarm, that operates on a individual room basis.

Room Tip: Higher is quieter but further away from animals.

We stayed at the Mountain lodge while on a safari with Liberty. We stayed 1 night. The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. The rooms were nice although the bathrooms were small. We had a balcony that overlooked the watering hotel and they knocked on our door at 11pm (as requested) because a hyena was outside!! There were not many animals appearing while we were there, but it was an amazing Experince. Hot water bottles in your bed at night and the sounds of the animals were a nice added experience during the night. The food was delicious. They do have a nature walk for $30 per person and they provide rain gear. There are lots of monkeys around so watch out and don't leave your windows or doors open.
There was also an observation deck and a secret tunnel so you could get excellent views of the watering hole.

My only complaint would be the walls are very thin and you can hear everyone around you.

Room Tip: All of the rooms over look the watering hole!!

We have just come back from our safari in Kenya. We have spent 1 of our nights at the Serena Mountain Lodge. We loved every minute we've spent there. The rooms were spotless and the view from the terrace and our rooms was like watching a movie where animals come to live at night. The food was the best we've had out of all the lodges we've stayed in. The champagne breakfast was impressive and the service was at its best. We did not manage to do the nature walk as we arrived late but we still saw lots of animals from the terrace. We will definitely come again.

Room Tip: All rooms have great views

This is the perfect spot to start your safari trip. It is just 2-3 hour drive from Nairobi and has a perfect perch to watch the animals visit the watering hole below. The service is great and it was the only lodge where we could order from a menu rather than a buffet. The nature walk tour was not worth the $30 or the time - better to relax on the veranda with your favorite beverage.
