The majestic mountain rises above the Equator near the doldrums where it is generally hot.The tracks leading to te top of the mountain are well marked and you require to be in a group to motivate each other. The mountain huts are good and you need all warm clothes.

Spurwing Travel & Tours LTD arranged a wonderful trek for me to climb Point Lenana on Mt Kenya and traverse the summit circuit. My trekking crew Charles, David, Joseph and Zachary were fantastic. I spent five nights and six days on the trek. Mt Kenya is absolutely gorgeous with numerous peaks and lakes. I stayed at the lovely Spurwing House B&B in Nairobi. The Operations Director Raphael and his wife Susan are extremely nice and helpful. This is a once in a lifetime experience that I will always cherish.

I had heard of Mt. Kenya being resembling the Indian Himalayas in two aspects 1) Major source of water for the country to the south & 2) Sacred. The Kenyans -kikuyu,Maasai & Ameru tribes regard it as a dwelling for their Gods like the Indians do for the Himalayas. In Kenya none but the holy could dare to enter its sanctuary of Gods own creation! Thus the country`s name is derived from this mountain.

So i set off north covering a distance of about 150 kms from Nairobi to this UNESCO world Heritage Center being 3 million years old to make it at 17007/ Ft, the highest mountain in Africa & the highest in Kenya. It is situated just south of the equator but covered with snow! Active volcanoes inside it had reduced the height by 6000/ Ft.

As i approach it`s foot, i see it arise from farmlands to thick bamboo jungle, zones of moors & glaciers to the peaks that offer stunning views! Snowy pinnacles& forested slopes appear as if in glorious technicolor on a Panavision screen etched against a dazzling blue sky! Major river systems emerge from the summit cutting deep gorges through moor lands & forests teeming with trouts!

Nearby is the Mt. Kenya National Park at 11000/Ft.covering an area of nearly 200 Skms.I did not visit the Park due to the high climb & lack of time nor the MT.Kenya Safari club.but did go to the William Holden Orphanage at Nanyuki. One sees it buzzing with all sorts of animals going about in complete harmony including the endangered African Antelope,Bongo! A wildebeest curiously trots past & a deer playfully head butts me.I see a monkey mischievously run off with a lady`s glasses & an Antelope provokes a cheetah safely from outside the wire mesh fence! A pair of white Llamas runs past us to make me feel that this must be what the `Garden of Eden looked like! The whole area worth the visit for its scenic beauty & its association!

Don't hesitate to book this trip. These guys looked after me from start to finish. Evans in the office, Alex the driver, Zak the mountain guide, David the (huge portions) chef and Josephur (singing & dancing) the assistant guide all made this a trip to remember.
Always safe and with my enjoyment a priority I will always remember this great adventure.
Its hard work and don't expect luxury accommodation - but what you will receive is a warm welcome, exposure to the great outdoors and some spectacular views as well as some wildlife if your lucky.
