Fantastic trip with go to mount Kenya, went up Sirimon and down Chigoria. Going down Chirgoria was well worth the extra day - stunning, unforgettable scenery. Arranged trip beforehand via Evans at Go To Mount Kenya - he was very helpful in helping us plan and the guide, cook and porters were fantastic - in setting the right pace up the mountain, feeding us extremely well and in being good company!

Climbing Mt. Kenya was so much better than I'd ever dreamed! The valleys were paradisical and the rivers clear; the birds were bountiful and the plants full of whimsy. It is quite high, so go slowly! No need to make yourself sick.

Mount Kenya forest is well conserved and the snow capped mountain peak is refreshing. It has large herds of mountain buffallo and giant forest hog. Mountain Lodge is among the best tree hotels in the world where rare black rhinos are sited.

Our group of 10 friends included two twenty-somethings, the rest adults over fifty-five some of whom were also over-weight. It was a crazy and exhilarating thing to do, and it was only thanks to the skill, patience and humour of our guides that we all made it to the spectacular sunrise on Pt Lenana. Being based in Naro Moru, I had plenty of time to select and get to know our guide Mohammed from Mohakin. Knowing my friends, it was his local knowledge and pride in getting his climbers to the summit that convinced me. On the walk, I understood the secret- an almost funereal pace, 'pole pole'. At that pace, we could enjoy the magnificent scenery, bird and plant life. I highly recommend it, even if you doubt your fitness - memories to last forever. One word of advice, we went up Sirimon and down Naro Moru. That last day is utterly and totally exhausting! Perhaps try to spend the night at Austrian or McKinders on the way down. Do it - you won't regret it.

Just returned from a great climb of mount Kenya and Safari
Tips
- This is not an easy climb, very technical, scree slopes and cold weather. Good gloves and socks on summit day essential.
- Altitude sickness a real issue in our group, climb slowly to avoid headaches and to get a good nights sleep. (altitude for us, bad, but not that bad, see below)
- Take enough booze, if thats your poisen, not enough for sale at the higher cabins.
- Freezing at night and warm in the day, layers, layers, layers.

We booked our climb and safari through a local company, High peaks safari, Peter Mbaru an excellent guide with good experiance, gentle pace and experianced porters and crew. Your money going to locals who can also show you around the local town and the bars and clubs if thats what your looking for.
No frills for us (he also offers luxury safaris as well as the climb and basic safari) however our trip was well organised, we got to the top of mount kenya, experianced the local culture and have seen the masai mara plus lake nekurus animals, all well explained and at a great price.

Highly recommened.
