“Powdered coffee straight out of a catering tin at breakfast says it all!!”
Reviewed January 2, 2011

Although the Merit has the very best location around Van the praise stops there. It was really overpriced for the service available.

English is not spoken,or indeed understood. The reception and waiting staff at this hotel were just awful - couldn't care less attitude was really infuriating, and the waft of xenophobia, overpowering. Getting an evening meal was a real challenge, and as we were not with "a group", we were really considered a nuisance - albeit an expensive nuisance.

The breakfasts however, when we eventually managed to attract attention were pleasant, with seating close to the lake. Coffee (in Turkey?) consisted of having to spoon disgusting powdered rubbish out of an A4 catering tin. We quickly learned to buy our own at a supermarket in Van.

Any form of local information such as Ferry timetable, museum and Van Castle opening times, places of interest to visit, tourist maps, was non-existant . This area is packed full of wonderful and interesting venues, but not one word about any of them at the hotel -not even a postcard.

The decor is very outdated, but mainly the Merit does not welcome or even want any tourists other than Turkish or even Kurdish guests. I gather that it is to be refurbished. Let us hope that they refurbish their rude members of staff too.

The Merit Sahmaran was the nicest hotel we stayed at during a week-long tour of eastern Turkey. It is definitely a 4 star facility, with helpful front-desk staff, an available public computer for guests, a beautiful pool-side bar area and breakfast buffet area, and a separate dining building with a fabulous dinner buffet. The location is right on the lake, about 6 or 8 miles from downtown Van.
The breakfast buffet was very extensive. It had excellent scrambled eggs with sweet red pepper, a greater variety of baked goods and a number of items we had not seen on other buffets.
Rooms were plenty large and were well-appointed.

The hotel is located on the banks of Van lake. Our room had a nice view over the lake. Try to get a room from the lake side, the road side might be a bit noisy. The weather feels fresh and in the evenings a bit chilly due to the lake. The restaurant was good , there were very nice local specialties. Breakfast was fabulous and it was served at the pool area just next to the lake. The pool is bright and clean however the lake seemed to be a bit blurry. Spa center worths a try, we really liked the hamam. The food and drinks are bit expensive. When thinking of the region, this hotel is clearly one of the few ones offering a decent quality of stay.

The hotel is very simple. If you stay in a room facing the parking lot, you have a choice of boiling to death at night with the window closed or getting a bit of a breeze with the street lights shining in your eyes and the traffic noise sounding all night. Either way: it's a lose-lose situation.

This hotel is in a super location, even if it is a little way from the town. We had a roadside room which was extremely noisy with the window open and very stuffy when the window was closed - not the best for a good nights sleep! The room itself was comfortable enough but was decorated in a very dated style. Both nights we were there there were functions around the swimming pool which meant that we could not really enjoy the ambiance of the beautiful dining room.

Anyone looking at this hotel is likely be of an adventurous nature but be assured that the area is fantastic and will repay your efforts. The history and sights are almost unbelievable and the people are the most friendly I encountered in Turkey. English is not widespread and when you meet people who do speak English they love discussing politics. Nothing is taboo in that respect. A cultural warning though - the older Kurdish women do not like to see men wearing shorts in public. It should also be noted that you are well over 5000ft above sea level. The hotel though is somewhat different and I review it from the point of view of international standards.
The hotel is situated about 6km from the airport and 12 km from centre of Van. Using the Dolmus from the hotel to Van and elsewhere is cheap, reliable and exciting. There is virtually no English spoken at the hotel. There is no information anywhere telling you about dining, breakfast times or anything for that matter. Trying to get pool towels is a major undertaking. The "air conditioning" is supposed to be centrally controlled. This means there isn't any! Sometimes they run out of ice.
The rooms while reasonably clean have all the appeal of a 1950s motel but without the style. Towels are changed daily.
Fine dining is not an option but so long as you are a carnivore you will survive.
There is a good sized swimming pool but the lake itself makes for an interesting alternative. The water is very saline and alkaline so that after a swim a fresh water shower needs no soap. Unfortunately there are rocks close to the surface at the end of the jetty and no warnings. A major accident is waiting to happen.
There were a couple of Kurdish weddings while we stayed - no warning from the hotel, but the music was interesting. Unfortunately there was also a group of rowdy Italian revellers whose idea of fun was to break beer bottles on the edge of swimming pool.
This hotel has guests from USA, Japan, Iran and Europe and it simply is not up to any international standards. The kindest I can be is that it is an amateur operation.
I am left with mixed feelings. The area around is sensational and so are the Kurds but this hotel left me feeling disappointed.

I have stayed there last summer with a group of friends for a couple of days. The whole stay was awesome. Great location on the coast of Van Lake, one of the most spectacular sunsets you can see. The food was so nice as well. The buffet was very rich and offering some delicious local specilaities as well. The guys at the reception were very warm and helpful. And the location was quite convenient. Close to the main historic attractions such as Akdamar Church, Van Castle...And, just to make an important correction, the hotel is actually 4 stars not 2 stars as indicated here. Would definitely stay there again!
