“Could be great but not where it counts unfortunately”

Booked this for five nights in February. Firstly, we really appreciated that the property was available for us after the terrible flooding in the area on Boxing Day. Almost every other building around us was either uninhabited or in the process of being refurbished. In contrast, May Cottage is very well decorated and, if they did have any damage, they've done a fantastic job in getting it back on the market.

The cottage is nice and compact with wood floors downstairs and carpeting upstairs except for the wood floors in the bathroom. We loved the location on the canal and it's only a 20 min walk into Hebden Bridge along the canal path (which can be muddy so take some boots). That said, it is on the main road between Burnley and Halifax and so there's pretty much constant noise from traffic all day. Because of the location between the road and the canal, this isn't the kind of place you'd bring young children.

There were a few things that made our stay less pleasant than we'd have liked and, unfortunately, these were key to an enjoyable stay.

The first was the bed which slopes into the centre leaving me with a painful back each morning unless I was very careful to sleep a certain way. Couple that with the road noise and it's easy to see why getting a lie in was difficult.

The second was the heating. We spent many hours in bed upstairs because we just couldn't get the living area warm even with the two radiators on full blast and the stove going the best we could get it going. Thankfully, we read comments from others in the guest book about how to use the portable thermostat and so could at least get upstairs warm. Getting downstairs above about 18 or 19 degrees in the evening was impossible so we spent a lot of time under blankets, even using the duvet from the spare room to keep cosy.

Finally, and I think this is something that really needs sorting, we found it really hard to get the bathroom plumbing to work well enough for consistent showers and baths. The taps on the bath have to be turned off very hard to stop water coming out and the lever to turn between shower and bath is broken off making it hard to move and even harder to know which is which the first time you turn it on. My wife didn't appreciate a wet head the first time! When in the shower you're battling between too hot and too cold and running a bath takes ages because, if you run it quickly, you only get tepid water.

We called the landlords for help with this the first night and they told us that because of the water pressure into the property the flow is too fast for the boiler unless you slow the water down. Well, we have mains pressure into our house in the northeast and our Worcester boiler doesn't bat an eyelid and pours out lovely hot water all the time. Maybe the boiler needs upgrading. We did manage some baths but, as we had to run the water so slowly, we had trouble keeping the bath water hot and it took ages to fill.

Finally, it's really hard not to get water on the floor when you have a shower and when you wash up in the kitchen. Because of the way the surfaces aren't true, water flows over the edge of the bath and even through the shower curtain as well as down the cupboard side in the kitchen. We tried our best!

We enjoyed our stay but it's unlikely that we'd stay again or recommend the cottage to anyone as there are so many others to choose from out there.

“Lovely cottage in a great location”

I visited this cottage with a friend for a week to relax and explore the countryside. The cottage itself was beautiful- decorated to a very high standard, had everything you needed including lots of kitchen equipment, very clean and we felt very at home here.

The cottage was a little difficult to find at first although the owners do give thorough directions on how to get here by car- we came by train and the taxi driver wasn't sure how to find it. Once you are there the location is lovely- canal view from the back of the house and it is tucked away in a square so minimal traffic noise and very peaceful. There are a couple of shops a few minutes walk away which are open early until late, which was very handy.
Easy to access a lot of different places from the location- would be easier if you had a car as some bus services are infrequent but we managed to visit everywhere we wanted without one.

Lots of useful information left in the cottage for us including attractions and walks, as well as a folder from the owners on how to work everything in the house.

I can't think of anything bad to say about the place, would definitely recommend!

Me and my partner stayed for a week in the cottage and it was such a pleasant experience. It has a gorgeous view over the canal and was quiet and peaceful. The location is lovely and the cottage has lots of character. It is well equipped and we will definitely be returning!!!

“Average cottage”

Cottage had a few problems with central heating and a small amount of water seeping through the floorboards. The owners when informed immediately got a plumber to sort out the problem. We found a few little issues, like the microwave was quite difficult to get timer to work, a little table would have been welcome in the lounge and in the bedroom for drinks. I was worried about the drainer too, it was wood and when the washing up was put in drainer the water dripped down onto floor. We had to buy dishcloths and scourers as none were in the cupboard. When we usually stay at any of Sykes cottages we usually have a good amount of kitchen equipment so was a little disappointed at May cottage.
We did like the cake that the owners left us,( very nice,) and to see the canal boats go past the kitchen window was a novelty. We had Wi Fi and the TV. and the bed was very cosy. Hebden Bridge was a lovely little place.
