The sea view from the Ubudo windows is not the best view in Matsushima, as you are looking past the slightly grimy fishing port to the beautiful pine-covered islands, but the rooms are large and traditionally Japanese without being oppressively so. For example, they have many sizes, shapes and colors of traditional clothing (yukata, samue) to wear inside the hotel, even sizes large enough for my husband and me.
We got one of the Japanese style rooms with a pottery bathtub--like sitting in a huge teacup--and if you like Japanese baths it was worth the extra price. The rooftop communal bath is also supposed to be beautiful, but with our in-room bath we didn't need it.
The two included meals--dinner and breakfast--were lavish, beautifully presented, and excellent if you like Japanese food. If you don't like (all) Japanese food, you might want to find a hotel that allows you to order off a menu.
Bottom line: there are probably better hotels in Matsushima-kaigan, with equally nice communal baths, and less obstructed views of the islands, but for the price Ubudo gave excellent value.More
