“Cosy base for Petra”
Reviewed December 15, 2011

We stayed here for 3 nights to explore magical Petra and were really happy with our choice of hotel.

From the get go, dealing with the lovely Ia (sorry if it's spelt wrong - but Ia (pronounced Ayga) is the friendly and helpful Aussie lady that works on the front desk) we had a great feeling about this hotel.

When we arrived we weren't disappointed, the rooms were really warm and cosy, beds were really comfy, and the bathrooms were clean with good hot water.

Ia provided us with great tips about when and what to see at Petra to beat the crowds and was also able to organise excursions to little Petra and Shobak Castle - both certainly worth a look if you have a spare afternoon.

The hotel is located just a couple of kilometres from the gate to Petra so only 2 JD in a taxi - the hotel encourages guests not to let the local drivers con them into paying more!!

There's a heated indoor pool and a great Turkish bath that does well priced, invigorating, sauna, scrub and massage treatments - our legs didn't ache at all the following day despite walking more than 12km around Petra that day so it must have done us some good!!  Oh and you get free wifi for the duration of your stay if you book a treatment!!

Restaurant seems to cater mostly for tour groups and is buffet style.  Despite this the food wasn't too bad.  Breakfast was similarly buffet style and again was ok for us.

My only gripe with the restaurant (in addition to the tour grounds) was that they interrupt you in the middle of eating to sign off on your drinks bill - this happened to us twice and in addition to being rude, made us feel like they were worried we were trying to dodge the bill!!  Mind you we saw them do this to others so didn't take it personally.  Might be a good idea for management to have a word with the restaurant staff about this though!!

Overall though we would highly recommend this hotel and would be more than happy to stay here again.

My husband and I stayed at the Amra Palace Hotel for one night prior to our visit to Petra. The staff was friendly and welcoming, the room was clean. The food was adequate. The internet worked. The charges were 2JD for 30 minutes, 3 JD for an hour and 7JD for a day. You could use your hour in segments which was nice. Overall, no complaints and I would stay there again.
It was mostly tour groups, and we were there in an off season so I don't know if it would be overwhelming during high season in the dining room and common areas.

Amra was quite nice compared to other hotels in the area (aside from Movenpick). They have a nice pool and Turkish bath. I do not recommend the scrub though. It was a horrifying experience for me. The staff at the hotel were helpful and rooms, breakfast, wifi were all fine. It's not as close to Petra entrance as to Movenpick but it's still a good location close by the bus station.

We were somewhat ambivalent about the Amra Palace after reading the reviews, but our experience (we stayed 3 nights) was great. Super friendly staff with a warm welcome and a bump-up to a better room (with a view over the town). For about $20 we bought the Turkish steam bath/ massage package, with free internet access thrown in. Breakfast and dinner buffets offered excellent variety and the warm swimming pool was delightful after a day of sightseeing. All in all, a perfect choice as a base for exploring Petra.

Stayed here for 2 nights. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable (especially good after trekking around Petra all day). The buffet breakfast and dinner had an amazing variety, plenty to choose from including lots of vegetarian options. Internet access (extra charge) not only at reception, but also on each floor as well. Outdoor eating area has a nice atmosphere. We also paid the extra to have a Turkish bath (this was a package with internet access) and this was an excellent way to unwind after a busy day exploring. Not walking distance to Petra but only a short bus/taxi trip away. Staff are very friendly and always ready to help.

My mum and I loved our 1 night stay at Amra Palace. Our room was clean, nice, comfy, ok sized although it was a bit dated and rather far away from the Petra Heritage site. Yet a very good price-quality ratio. Very helpful staff everywhere (front desk, restaurant, floor cleaners etc). Excellent breakfast buffet and very inexpensive dinner buffet. Good variety of services.

We chose to stay at Amra Palace based on the other reviews that we had read and we were not disappointed. The buffet breakfast was a stand out for us and we were amazed at the choices available. It was a 5 star breakfast with freshly cooked waffles and pancakes, eggs 2 ways, numerous other hot dishes, a great range of breads and pastries and a large selection of cold dishes. There was even a diet station catering for those watching what they eat. The buffet dinner was also of excellent standard with a large choice of salads, 2 soups, 5 hot meals selections and then desserts – you certainly don't come away hungry. we did the guided tour of Petra with the hotel's recommended guide Mohammed and for 20JD we had a really informative 5 hour tour through Petra – we highly recommend using Mohammed as your guide. The staff helped organise transport for us at a very reasonable cost with a driver who had excellent English. The staff are really attentive and friendly and provided us with some great local knowledge that made our stay fantastic.
